FIREFIGHTER-EMT

Position Summary
The Firefighter-EMT position performs specialized work in providing life saving services (EMS) and the prevention and suppression of fires. EMT duties include responding with ambulance service to emergency medical service calls and transporting sick and injured persons in response area. Firefighting work includes combating, extinguishing and preventing fires, as well as, operating and maintaining fire department equipment and apparatus. Duties follow prescribed policies and procedures, but independent judgment may be required in certain circumstances.
While we always prefer that employees live within Lyon County, our residency policy has been amended. Employees are required to reside within Lyon county or the counties immediately surrounding. We work the Berkley shift schedule (24 on, 24 off, 24 on, 24 off, 24 on, 4 days off). There is no mandatory call back although a substantial amount of call back time is available.

Firefighter-EMT Position Requirements
Experience: The employee in this position is expected to have acquired the necessary information and skills to perform the job reasonably well after one year in the position.
Education:High school diploma or GED required.
Certifications: Certification as Emergency Medical Technician at a minimum.
Must maintain all required certifications.
License: Requires a current and valid regular Class C Kansas driver's license.
Knowledge, Skills, &Abilities:
Problem solving is a factor in this position. Problems include determining strategies for fire suppression methods to be used on EMS calls.
Decision Making: Decision making is a factor in this position. Decisions include the selection of proper methods and techniques for rescue and fire suppression activities.
Financial Accountability:Employee is not responsible for budgetary control of the department and does not participate in the annual department budget process.
Supervision: Overall supervision is provided and job-related decisions are reviewed by the company officer. This position does not have supervisory responsibility for subordinate personnel.
Personal
Relations:Frequent contact with city departments and the general public is to be expected.
Working Physical effort is required. Extreme weather, blood-borne pathogens, toxic fumes and Conditions:hazardous situations during fire fighting and emergency medical response are factors in this
position.
