What are the responsibilities and job description for the Assistant News Editor position at The Courier?
The Assistant News Editor will take on responsibility in The Courier's daily editorial work in a multitude of ways: this person will help develop and drive news coverage with the reporting team each day, help lay out each day's edition, and assist with supervising the page design team.
This person would work in tandem with the Community Editor on each of these processes. Expected shift is roughly 11 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. each day, allowing for ample overlap with the Community Editor's workday schedule, which begins in the morning and ends around 5.
The Assistant News Editor will play a big role in pushing news stories to the next level and ensuring The Courier's readers are informed and entertained, and will work hand-in-hand with reporters on their assignments to make this happen. They will be captain of each edition of The Courier, finishing out content processing and layout at the end of each day, and will play a role in fostering a collaborative nature between our hybrid in-house and remote design team, getting that afternoon/evening work off the ground and assisting with any issues that arise.
The Courier is part of a group of Northern Ohio newspapers that work together to form one of Ohio's best journalistic groups. Out of our Findlay office, we design five different daily newspapers six days a week. Our teams in Findlay, Fostoria, Tiffin, Sandusky and Norwalk work together to develop news daily.
