The Governor’s Academy, the oldest boarding school in New England, inspires and engages inquisitive students in ninth through twelfth grade. Our 456-acre campus is located thirty miles north of Boston and five miles south of Newburyport, a classic New England coastal town. Govs has approximately 400 students and 200 employees.

POSITION SUMMARY
The Governor’s Academy is looking for a talented and forward-thinking Boys Varsity Head Football Coach to compete in the New England Independent School League (ISL) and instructors and directors to contribute to the afternoon program. Developing character and leadership skills in young people is at the core of what we do here at The Governor’s Academy. The coaches, instructors, and directors need to play a role in helping our students in the program develop physically, artistically, socially, and academically.
The Boys Varsity Head Football Coach should have extensive knowledge of football and experience playing and/or coaching at the secondary or collegiate level, and be familiar with and comply with the philosophy and policies of The Governor’s Academy. Head coaches have responsibility for all aspects of their program including developing and mentoring athletes. Head coaches manage assistant coaches, to whom they may delegate authority, although ultimately responsibility for the program resides with them.
Qualifications
QUALIFICATIONS
- Must know the rules of football.
- Must demonstrate sportsmanship and role-modeling behavior with athletes.
- Must show cooperative behavior, and a calm and composed demeanor.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills are required.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
- Occasional lifting, bending, and climbing stairs.
- Frequent talking, listening, walking, sitting, and standing.
- Ability to perform multiple concurrent tasks and function in a fast-paced working environment.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
- The Athletics Department is a busy work environment in which there is a significant amount of personal interaction.
- The Coach must be flexible, enthusiastic, hard-working, and responsible.
- Must have a valid driver’s license.
- The Academy is a non-smoking campus
This is a seasonal part-time position. However, for the 2025-2026 academic year, we have various full-time teaching positions available, and this coaching role may serve as a complement to those positions.
