Substitute School Nurse

Reports to: Head Nurse

Primary Responsibilities:

• Maintain and keep current an active State of Georgia Registered Professional Nurse license; BSN is the preferred undergraduate degree.
• Ensure a minimum of one year of clinical nursing experience; two years of clinical nursing and school nursing experience are preferred.
• Stay up-to-date with CEU requirements for the State of Georgia to maintain an active RN license, providing a copy of the license to HR or the Head Nurse at hiring and upon renewal.
• Hold and keep current CPR/AED/first aid training; provide certification cards to HR or the Head Nurse at hiring and upon renewal.
• Participate in any required screening (for students, staff, or faculty) and assist with screening as requested.
• Perform routine physical activities necessary to fulfill job responsibilities.
• Demonstrate proficiency in written and oral communication and basic clinical skills, such as blood pressure monitoring, illness evaluation, emergency triage, and knowledge of basic pediatric care and diseases.
• Maintain positive working relationships with school personnel, students, and families.
• Display competency in computer applications, record-keeping, and organizational skills.
• Exhibit interpersonal skills necessary for managing the infirmary and possess knowledge of fundamental nursing concepts, practices, and procedures.
• Full-time and job share nurses must learn and become proficient in the electronic health system used by the school; substitute nurses are not permitted to access the electronic system.
• Participate in specialized pediatric continuing education for conditions like asthma, diabetes, concussion, and other common pediatric diseases/injuries. Continuing education may be mandated by the Head Nurse if deficiencies are identified.
• Perform other duties as assigned by the appropriate Lovett administrator.

Position Requirements:

• Utilizes a comprehensive clinical knowledge base for decision-making and delivers nursing services in line with Georgia Board of Nursing rules and regulations.
• Ensures that all procedures are efficient, safe, and effective, maintaining accurate documentation of clinical services, including emergency situations, while upholding ethical and professional behavior and confidentiality at all times.
• Administers and documents medications, including emergency medications, to students according to established infirmary policies, procedures, protocols, and physician directions.
• Organizes and maintains a clean and orderly clinic to ensure a safe physical environment, consistently practicing standard precautions. This includes securing medication cabinets, ensuring clinic supplies are adequately stocked, and placing sharps containers in appropriate locations.
• Provides privacy and a nurturing environment; models respect toward students, faculty, and staff; acts as a student advocate and communicates clear behavior expectations in the clinic.
• Identifies and manages individuals with suspected infectious illnesses and aids in preventing transmission to others.
• Communicates and collaborates professionally and frequently with school personnel, fellow nurses, students, and families regarding school health issues.
