Job Summary

Total Health Care and The Department of Family and Community Medicine at the University of Maryland School of Medicine are recruiting Urban Primary and Community Health Fellows. This partnership leverages both organizations’ commitment to excellence in patient care – especially those in need, with a goal of reducing health disparities and improving the lives of the community we serve.

 

Reporting to the Chief Medical Officer and/or their designee

This 18-month non-accredited fellowship is designed to prepare you for a career in academic and community medicine. Fellows will have tailored experience to advance their clinical and career objectives. Fellows will gain skills to teach medical students and residents, enhance clinical expertise, and develop special interests in the practice of urban based Family Medicine. This program will provide trainees with varied clinical exposures, mentorship, leadership development, and guided experience as an educator to learners at both our downtown faculty/resident practice as well as Total Health Care, an established Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC). 

This position requires a medical degree from an accredited domestic university (or foreign equivalent), a strong commitment to patient care and teaching, and the ability to work well in a team setting. Candidates must be board certified/eligible in family medicine, eligible for an unrestricted license in the State of Maryland and meet all requirements for appointment in the School of Medicine as Clinical Instructor. Fellows will spend approximately 80% time in clinical practice or supervision of residents/medical students; and 20% in fellowship activity, including a mentored scholarly project, administrative experiences, focused mentored supervision. 

This 18-month fellowship is designed to further train and prepare board certified family physicians to:

  • Be clinical experts in the care of urban vulnerable populations
  • Gain experience in urban primary care program design and oversight
  • Gain experience in the teaching of medical students and residents in community and academic health center settings
  • Conduct a research project with the guidance of an established researcher/mentor
  • Present scholarly work with local, regional, and national audiences
  • Have mentorship activities with leaders in Academic Medicine FQHC Clinical Administration 

Fellows will:

 

  • Be based at a FQHC in partnership with our Academic Medical Center
  • Have clinical sessions at the Federally Qualified Health Center
  • Teach University medical students and family practice residents at the FQHC & Department of Family and Community Medicine
  • Have mentored supervision to meet the shared goals of the FQHC / Academic Health Center partnership
  • Complete a scholarly project with mentorship from an experienced researcher and / or health care administrator and / or academic physician

 Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

 

Excellent leadership, customer service, organizational and presentation skills as well as the ability to effectively communicate THC’s vision, and motivate others to achieve it organizationally, departmentally, and personally/professionally. Ability to communicate effectively (verbally and in writing). Ability to plan and organize work initiatives to successfully accomplish center/organizational goals and objectives. Ability to multi-task, prioritize and delegate as appropriate. Strong analytical, problem solving and interpersonal skills. Ability to identify, develop and implement short/long-term strategic goals and objectives. Ability to develop and maintain customer relationships; influence, build credibility and trust. Ability to think critically as well as apply critical thinking skills. Ability to: ensure and advocate for quality healthcare and services; and, lead and manage a diverse staff. 

 

Licenses and Certifications

  • Maryland Medical License – State DEA – Federal DEA
  • Must be Board Certified or Eligible 
  • Current CPR certification  

                                 

Physical Demands 

Must have the use of sensory skills in order to effectively communicate and interact with other employees and the public through the use of the telephone and personal contact as normally defined by the ability to see, read, talk, hear, handle or feel objects and controls.

 

Ability to effectively use and operate various items of office related equipment, such as, but not limited to: personal computer, calculator, copier, and fax machine.

 

Ability to lift, carry, push or pull heavy objects in excess of 75lbs as well as squat, walk, climb, bend, crouch, stoop, kneel, stand, grasp, reach, pull and repetitive motions.
