JOB SUMMARY
The Crew Leader is to lead and is to perform work functions to oversee crews involved in the construction, maintenance, and repair of streets, sidewalks, and trail infrastructure.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Leads the installation and maintenance of various work activities involved with the construction, repair and maintenance of streets and roads, such as hauling and moving materials, excavating earth, leveling and grading roads, filling surfaces, stabilizing soil, scraping roads/removing snow, digging and backfilling trenches, installing drainage pipes, cleaning and repairing drainage structures, installing and repairing sidewalks and curbs, and performing other constructions and maintenance operations
- Leads the setup of work zones to protect crew members from traffic; street closures and placement of traffic control devices and warning signs; sets up and maintains street closures and detours
- Leads and oversees work site preparation; calls locate tickets in, takes pictures and documents conditions of work site prior to work beginning; performs any tasks small and large to complete work
- Adheres to established safety procedures; monitors work environment and use of safety equipment to ensure safety of employees and other individuals; flags and directs traffic and places markers, signs and cones around project/work site to ensure safety of crew and the traveling public; and follows safety practices and wears protective gear; initiates any action necessary to correct deviations or violations
- Maintains inventories of supplies on service vehicles, forms, and equipment; ensures availability of adequate supplies to complete work activities
- Performs general cleaning/maintenance tasks necessary to keep machinery, equipment, and tools in operable condition, which may include inspecting equipment, checking fluid levels, replacing fluids, greasing equipment, washing/cleaning equipment, and cleaning shop and work areas; monitors equipment operations to maintain efficiency and safety; reports faulty equipment
- Communicates with supervisor, Town employees, and the public as needed to coordinate work activities, review status of work, exchange information, resolve problems, or give/receive advice/direction, addresses employee performance, negativity within the crew members, addresses any safety issues or concerns
- Performs other duties as required
JOB CONTEXT
The Crew Leader will perform tasks that require the regular and sustained performance of moderately physically demanding work, typically involving some combination of climbing and balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling, and that generally involves lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of moderately heavy objects and materials (20-50 pounds). The typical work schedule is Monday - Friday 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
WORK PERFORMANCE
The Crew Leader is required to follow departmental expectations and adhere to all rules, regulations, policies, and procedures in the Town of Christiansburg Employee Handbook. Work performance is reviewed utilizing the Town’s employee performance review program following first six-month introductory period. During this introductory period and going forward, the employee must demonstrate a strong understanding of all that the job requires.
JOB REQUIREMENTS
- High School diploma or GED; supplemented by two (2) years of experience in construction, maintenance, and repair of streets and sidewalks; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience
- Valid Virginia Commercial driver’s license (CDL) including appropriate endorsements or an expired CDL with the ability to renew within six (6) months
- The ability to meet and maintain Town insurability requirements
- Flagging Work Zone, First Aid and CPR, OSHA Lockout/Tag out
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
- Have knowledge of Town Code, policies, and procedures.
- Act as a first line supervisor, including instructing, reviewing work, maintaining standards, and coordinating activities
- Operate, maneuver and/or control the actions of equipment, machinery, tools, and/or materials requiring complex and/or rapid adjustments
TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT
- medium and heavy-duty equipment such as backhoes, excavators, rubber tire loaders, dozer, track loader, tandem and single axel dump trucks, service trucks, sewer jet machines, valve exerciser, pavement saw, chop saws, core drill, grinder, power tools, a personal computer, tablet, general office equipment, or other equipment as necessary to complete necessary essential functions, to include the use of word processing, spreadsheet, database, or other system software
SAFETY
The employee shall adhere to Town of Christiansburg policies regarding safety precautions and the use of safety equipment that is necessary for the health and safety of all employees and citizens. If a safety concern arises, the employee must stop any life-threatening activity immediately inform the employee’s supervisor.
