JOB SUMMARY
The public works department provides its employees a clear path for growth by providing unique training opportunities in both the skilled trades and technical field positions. The purpose of this position is to perform semi-skilled essential functions associated with General Services, Streets and Utilities divisions in the public sector. Regarding equipment operation, the emphasis is on the operation of vehicles, trucks, and small construction equipment where driving and maneuvering the vehicle constitutes the majority of the work required to complete tasks. To attain Maintenance Worker I status, the employee must be proficient in work functions in at least one divisional crew and any vehicles and equipment assigned. The amount of time assigned to any division and duty fluctuates according to the season and needs of the department.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Participates as a working team member performing manual labor for one or more divisions to include repairing/replacing asphalt; mowing, trimming and watering grass, trees, and flowers/plants; cleaning and repairing/replacing storm water channels, structures, pipes and culverts; repairing/replacing sidewalks, curbs, and gutters; repairing/replacing sewer utility hole structures and water meter vaults; providing maintenance on water and sewer pipes and infrastructure; removing litter, debris and deceased animals from streets/roads, drainage systems, parks, playing fields and Town property; and supporting facility maintenance operations
- Operates hand and power tools to include plate tampers, shovels, rakes, brooms, saws, mowers, trimmers, sprayers, blowers, vacuum, compactors, trowels, digging bars, mops, and floor buffers
- Participates in scheduled programs such as on-call, Fall/Spring cleanup, leaf collection and monthly brush collection
- Responds to emergencies and severe weather events to prepare and operate equipment for snow and ice removal and other types of hazardous road conditions
- Performs general maintenance tasks necessary to keep machinery, equipment, and tools in operable condition to include pre-trip inspections, preventive maintenance, and washing/cleaning equipment, shop, and work areas; reports faulty equipment
- Assists in work zone set up and flagging operations
- Performs other duties as assigned
JOB CONTEXT
The Maintenance Worker I will perform tasks that require the regular and, at times, sustained performance of moderately physically demanding work, typically involving some combination of climbing and balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling, and that may involve the lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of moderately heavy objects and materials. The typical work schedule is Monday - Friday 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. with a half-hour break for lunch. Scheduled/unscheduled overtime may be mandated as circumstances and workload dictates. Tasks may require exposure to extreme hot and cold temperature weather conditions and environmental conditions.
WORK PERFORMANCE
The Maintenance Worker I is required to follow departmental expectations and adhere to all rules, regulations, policies, and procedures in the Town of Christiansburg Employee Handbook. Performance and conduct are assessed on a regular basis, but the Maintenance Worker I will receive a formal review following the first six-month introductory period and going forward, the employee must demonstrate a strong understanding of all the job requires.
JOB REQUIREMENTS
- High School diploma or GED; supplemented by two (2) years of experience
- Class B Virginia Commercial Driver’s License or an expired CDL with the ability to renew within six (6) months
- The ability to meet and maintain Town insurability requirements
- Work Zone Safety, VA Flagging, Blood Borne Pathogens, and CPR & First Aid certification, Confined Space
- Knowledge of department and Town policies, and procedures
- May be required to obtain and maintain other certifications as deemed necessary
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
- Skill in the use of standard tools and equipment of the profession
- Ability to maintain and care for hand and power tools
- Ability to carry out detailed but routine written and oral instructions
- Ability to communicate effectively in both oral and written form
- Ability to perform 24-hour on-call responsibilities and work varied shifts as assigned
- Ability to perform manual labor for extended periods, often under unfavorable work or weather conditions.
- Knowledge of motor vehicle operations, traffic rules and regulations, and maintenance of motor vehicles
- Skill in performing routine maintenance on equipment and determining when and what kind of maintenance is needed
- Ability to work successfully as a member of a team and independently with moderate supervision
SAFETY
The employee shall adhere to Town of Christiansburg policies regarding safety precautions and the use of safety equipment that is necessary for the health and safety of all employees and citizens. If a safety concern arises, the employee must stop any life-threatening activity immediately and in other cases immediately inform the employee’s supervisor.
