JOB SUMMARY
The Recreation Assistant II is responsible for opening and closing of the Aquatic Center, facility tours, customer service, part time staff supervision and facility supervision.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Sets up facility equipment needed to successfully hold programs and rentals, assists with scheduling conflicts, video projection and presentation set-up
- Provides customer service to patrons, including handling customer conflict and complaints as necessary in a prompt, effective, and courteous manner; safeguards and regulates conduct of facility patrons; enforces facility policies and procedures
- Maintains petty cash/cash till monies used as change for facility registration and front desk; routinely performs facility duties including front desk closing procedures
- Provides the public with clear knowledge of the Aquatic Center and updates staff appropriately
- Maintains and monitors fitness room equipment and clientele, daily check of safety and liability issues relating to machines
- Compiles aquatic service statistics and records data daily
- Assists with lifeguard duties as necessary
- Assists in the proper sanitary operation of the pool, pool area and locker rooms
- Assists with monitoring of patron surveillance and maintain industry-standard safety protocols and complete daily facility safety checks
- Responds to aquatic emergencies as main support team member and coordinates main entrance procedures with rescue personnel; provides written report on all accidents and forwards to manager
- Ensures pool environment is properly maintained to prevent accidents, reports information as needed to Operations Supervisor
- Other duties as required by supervisor
JOB CONTEXT
The Recreation Assistant II works up to 25 hours a week depending on assigned shift worked (AM, PM, or weekend). Tasks require the ability to exert moderate to heavy physical effort, typically involving some combination of walking, jumping, running, climbing, sitting, and which may involve some lifting and lifting overhead, balancing, carrying, pushing and/or pulling, of objects and materials of moderate to heavy weight (up to 100 pounds).
WORK PERFORMANCE
The employee is required to follow departmental expectations and adhere to all rules, regulations, policies, and procedures in the Town of Christiansburg Employee Handbook.
JOB REQUIREMENTS
- A High School diploma; supplemented by thorough knowledge in the aquatic recreation field
- Must possess and maintain current American Red Cross CPR, First Aid, Lifeguard Training, AED, and Emergency Response certifications, or ability to obtain/maintain immediately upon hire
- Must have reliable transportation to and from work
- Certified Pool/Spa Operator or Aquatic Facility Operator certificate preferred, or ability to obtain certification (within one year of hire date) and maintain
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
- General knowledge of office practices and procedures, including computer applications. Prior working knowledge with recreation software is preferred
- Working knowledge of community recreation as it relates to aquatics, including accepted standards, principles, and concepts
- Knowledge of general principles in providing effective customer service
- Thorough knowledge of swimming pool management systems and operation, including sanitation, filtration, purification, and safety
- Considerable knowledge of safety and liability/risk management as it pertains to an aquatic facility
- Excellent interpersonal and relationship building skills
- Engaging, customer-service focused attitude
- Proactive nature with the ability to work independently but also comfortable asking for assistance whenever needed
- Ability to follow Christiansburg Aquatic Center and Town of Christiansburg policies and procedures at all times
- Ability to maintain professional and courteous relationships with internal and external customers at all times
- Ability to communicate clearly, concisely, and effectively, both orally and in writing, at the professional level
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment
