The Town of Falmouth welcomes applications for a full-time Local Inspector for our Building Department. This is a full-time, year-round, benefited position that works 40 hours per week, Monday through Friday, from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. with occasional call-outs paid with a 4-hour minimum at the overtime rate.

Under the direction of the Building Commissioner, the Local Inspector provides inspection, administrative, and technical work related to the enforcement and interpretation of the State Building Code, the local zoning bylaw, and other applicable regulations. Duties include but are not limited to: inspecting existing buildings and those under construction to monitor compliance with building code and bylaws; issuing certificates of inspection and stop work orders; reviewing plans; and maintaining associated logs and records.

Minimum Requirements: High school diploma or equivalent and five (5) years of experience in the supervision of building construction; associate degree in a related field; or any equivalent combination of education and experience. Applicants must have a valid Massachusetts Construction Supervisors’ License.

Candidates must also have the ability to interpret and enforce regulations firmly and impartially, to deal appropriately with the public and the building community, and to read blueprints. Applicants must also be able to access all areas of building construction sites, walk for long periods of time, climb, crawl, and lift up to 30 pounds. Must have a valid Massachusetts motor vehicle license.

Preference will be given to applicants with a valid Certificate of Local Inspector. If the successful candidate does not have a valid Certificate of Local Inspector, he/she/they must obtain full certification as a Local Inspector per the state requirements and the Massachusetts Building Code. As of January 2025, per 110.R7.1.7.4. in order to apply for full certification as a Local Inspector, the applicant must attain passing scores in all examinations required for certification under the National Certification Program for Construction Code Inspector (NCPCCI) or International Code Council (ICC) within one (1) year of the Town of Falmouth Local Inspector appointment date.

Expected Starting Hourly Rate: Step 1 ($33.61/hour) to Step 5 ($39.31/hour), commensurate with qualifications and experience, with eligibility for annual advancement along the 7-step pay scale.
