Job Summary:
MRI technologists operate magnetic resonance imaging equipment to produce optimal images of the body for diagnostic purposes. Performs MRI procedures, providing patient and provider services. Applies principles of MRI physics to assure patient and staff safety. Exercises professional judgment and critical thinking skills in the performance of procedures. Provides patient care essential to MRI procedures, including administration of contrast media. Recognizes patient conditions requiring immediate action and initiates life support measures.
Skills and Abilities:
- Perform complex tasks associated with the operation of high field strength magnets and related equipment to produce special radiographic images of specific body parts.
- Position patients for MR scans using immobilization and protective equipment to comply with government regulations and to ensure the safety of patients and staff.
- Screen patients for MR safety prior to performing procedure.
- Assist the radiologist with performance of procedures.
- Address patient concerns in a empathic manner, seeking to comfort them and ease any anxiety with comfort measures. Practice AIDET.
- Start I.V.’s. Administer contrast media as directed and per protocol.
- Evaluate MR scans for technical quality, collate processed images and sequences and label appropriately.
- Assure a clean, tidy, well-stocked and well-organized environment.
- Charge MR procedures and supplies in EHR and ensure images are available in PACs system.
- Load and operate power injectors for contrast media administration.
- Maintain accurate patient records, assuring all safety forms and consents are presented in PACs and EHR.
- Provide orientation, safety training and oversight for new and student technologists.
- Provide education and training for student technologists.
- Provide for the psychological and physical needs of patients for MR procedures.
- Assist with MR Safety education and training of staff. Coordinate with leadership for presentations.
- Assist radiologists in developing new protocols and application of new MR imaging techniques.
- Understand and use the PACS system as appropriate to assure image quality and integrity.
- Maintains patient confidentiality.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Education and Training:
- Graduate of Committee of Allied Health Education and Accreditation (AMA) Accredited Radiography Program, or equivalent.
Licensures/ Certifications:
- American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification or equivalent.
- Current MRI registry or ability to obtain within one year of hire.
- Current American Heart Association’s BLS/CPR certification card.
Experience:
- Prefer minimum of one year hospital MRI experience.
