Responsibilities

RN NURSE MANAGER

JOB DESCRIPTION: Under the direction of the Director of Nursing, the Nurse Manager is responsible for the clinical leadership and coordination of all nursing personnel. This position ensures the delivery of quality nursing care by managing and supervising the staff providing direct care. Serves actively and constructively as member of the multi-disciplinary treatment team in support of the organization and program treatment philosophy; to ensure the safety and well-being of patients.

JOB RESPONSIBLITIES:

  • Provides leadership through assessment, planning, implementing and evaluation of direct patient care services provided in each clinical area.
  • Assists DON and HR Department with hiring and selection processes through screening, interviewing and making recommendation for hire. Anticipates staffing trends and needs and proactively offers staffing solutions.
  • Ensures productive and efficient staffing of units based on a thorough understanding of the correlation between patient census and FTE standards; coordinates with Scheduler and assumes staffing function as needed.
  • Monitors patient progress in compliance with treatment plan, making recommendations in accordance with patient care needs; ensure medical/nursing needs are addressed in the treatment plan.
  • Provides clinical supervision and assists staff in planning patient care
  • Creates, maintains, actively audits clinical and performance databases; works to ensure, timely, accurate completion of all required care documentation by nursing care staff.
  • Provides feedback to staff on performance, reinforcing desired behaviors and teambuilding efforts and intervening promptly in deficiencies to reduce turnover rate and formal performance measures.
  • Instructs and guides mental health specialists, and nurses in patient care responsibilities and assignments
  • Demonstrates clinical expertise and sets a strong therapeutic tone for patient interventions; works diligently to reduce the occurrences of physical restraint and seclusion of patients.
  • Reviews safety, risk management, infection control and incident reports to identify and discuss trends with nursing staff.
  • Reviews and analyzes patient chart data for nursing improvement opportunities in the areas of programming and core delivery
  • Working with DON, develops and implements ongoing staffing development plans; coordinates training resources to meet those needs
  • Performs personnel management activities including direct staff supervision, orientation/training/development, performance management and employee relations functions; adheres to HR policies/procedures, and applicable employment laws, standards and regulations
  • Completes Kronos data entry for direct care staff ensuring a timely and accurate account of hours worked each week/pay period
  • Completes performance evaluations for staff in a timely manner, including initial and 90-day competencies, and annual performance evaluations
  • May serve as the acting DON in the absence of the DON and work on the unit in critical staffing situations
  • Perform other duties that may be assigned.
  • Qualifications

    EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE: Possesses current, valid State of Alaska RN license. Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing or baccalaureate program (preferred.) Experience in planning and implementing therapeutic programming and experience with clinical infection control practices required.

    KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS:

    • Possess a working knowledge of aseptic techniques, prevention and control of communicable diseases, safe work practices and basics management skills.
    • Remain current with federal, state, and local healthcare standards, policies and procedures for workplace health and safety.
    • Ability to maintain working relationships with medical staff.
    • Possess sound clinical judgment and critical thinking skills.
    • Possess good record-keeping and organizational skills.
    • Able to perform concentrated and/or complex mental activity with frequent involvement in complex and/or highly technical situations;
    • Ability to perform assignments with minimal supervision; be self-directed and willing to assume decision making responsibilities;
    • Ability to work successfully under highly stressful conditions;
    • Ability to make sound, independent judgments based on scientific and/or ethical principles;
    • Capability of adapting to varying workloads and work assignments on a constant basis;
    • Effective comprehensive reading skills, strong communication skills - both written and verbal.
    • Must have math skills to perform calculation of drug dosages.
    • Must possess a valid Alaska Drivers License in order to transport patients and/or staff, or drive hospital vehicles.
    • Must have a working knowledge of computers.
    • Possesses/displays working knowledge of basic statistical data analysis (collecting, organizing, analyzing and presenting relevant clinical data as needed and assigned).

    MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS OF THE POSITON:

    • Must be willing and able to execute the patient de-escalation methods, both verbal and physical.
    • Must be able to complete new hire requirements such as State of Alaska Background Check and Drug Testing.
    • Must be able to demonstrate special training, knowledge and skills specific to age groups, as well as job and/or program specific competency within the first three (3) months of training.
    • Must be certified in CPR and Handle with Care within the first month of training and annually thereafter.
    • Must complete all mandatory in-services annually.
    • Must attend and/or participate in monthly direct care staff and nurse meetings
    • Must be tested for Tuberculosis with a PPD skin test or chest x-ray upon hire; PPD skin test required annually or chest x-ray annually thereafter.
    • Must be at least 21 years of age.
