Umass Memorial Health is Hiring a Lab Supervisor, Hematology & Coagulation Near Leominster, MA

POSITION SUMMARY:This position is responsible for the planning, direction, and supervision of all technical aspects of assigned department within the laboratory to ensure the safe and efficient performance of departmental operations. This position reports to the Administrative Director of the Laboratory. Reporting to this position are Medical Technologist, Medical Lab Technicians, Laboratory Assistants and Central Processing Assistants.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Prepares, conducts, and coordinates programs for orienting and training of new clients and retraining of existing clients.
  • Works collaboratively with the Lab Services Assistant to respond to client’s needs related to instrumentation (i.e. fax machines, printers), supplies, and customized requisitions. Supervises the work of laboratory personnel engaged in performing routine and specialized technical procedures, including planning laboratory work, evaluating work performed and handling procedural and technical laboratory problems.
  • Assists with creating and maintaining Laboratory’s Test Directory.
  • Produces a monthly report detailing the testing ordered and volume of tests by client.
  • Maintains all physician contact numbers for laboratory use.
  • Maintains courier and darting schedule for all specimen pickups and deliveries to and from clients.
  • Participates in the development of policies and procedures needed for the Laboratory Outreach program.
  • Designs appropriate work schedules for subordinate employees and plans daily work assignments in order to maintain an adequate personnel complement for laboratory efficiency.
  • Supervises various personnel functions including, but not limited to assisting with the interviewing process for prospective employees, making recommendations during the hiring process, overseeing the new employee orientation to the department, and providing input for employee performance appraisals, promotions, and transfers.
  • Monitors Quality Control, Quality Assurance, Safety and Infection Control practices to assure compliance with internal and external regulations.
  • Monitors productivity statistics to achieve the most efficient use of staff and provide required turnaround time of patient results.
  • Coordinates student rotations to include instruction in laboratory methods and procedures.


JOB REQUIREMENT

EDUCATION:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Medical Technology or related field preferred; or has met the minimal education and experience requirements as outlined by a nationally recognized Medical Technology certifying body.


EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor’s Degree with a minimum of 1 year of full time experience with high complexity testing, or Associate’s Degree with a minimum of 2 years of full time experience with high complexity testing preferred.
  • Highly preferred experience: 5 years of high complexity testing in a clinical laboratory of similar or larger size.


LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS, ETC.

  • American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP), National Certification Agency for Laboratory Personnel (NCA) or equivalent.
