As Corporate Counsel, you will be an integral member of the legal team and company as a whole, and will report directly to Umbra’s VP, Head of Legal. We are a small team with all hands-on deck, and you will be making a meaningful impact on the day-to-day operations of a fast-paced technology company. We are enablers of business strategy and promoters of innovation who help business teams assess the risk and reward and strive to maintain our reputation as “the department of ‘yes’.” To excel in this role, you must be passionate about problem solving and finding creative solutions for novel and challenging issues while being attentive to detail, meticulously organized, and maintaining a positive attitude (even when working under pressure). Key Responsibilities

  • Provide legal counsel and day-to-day management for commercial and government transactions.
  • Work with cross-functional teams, including Government Programs, Commercial Experience, Finance, Procurement, and other relevant teams, to drive business growth and sound risk management practices.
  • Support the readiness and release of products and features by identifying and driving resolution of issues related to intellectual property, privacy, data security, and other legal and regulatory areas.
  • Draft, review, and negotiate various contracts with Umbra’s customers, strategic partners, vendors, and subcontractors.
  • Collaborate with teams to build and maintain compliance programs to ensure the company meets and exceeds its legal and ethical obligations.
  • Manage and foster relationships with government procurement officials, business partners, and regulators.
  • Develop and deliver training on relevant legal issues to internal stakeholders.
  • Take responsibility for material projects with substantial business impact.
  • Participate in other projects as needed and contribute to the areas where you have skills.

Basic Qualifications

  • Attorney in good standing in at least one state in the United States.
  • 7 years of relevant legal experience.
  • Demonstrated commercial and government contracting experience with an understanding of the government procurement process, including contract negotiation and data rights.
  • Experience counseling business teams through the product development lifecycle and advising on the legal and regulatory aspects of product development.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment under minimum supervision.
  • Resilience, resourcefulness, and the ability to make decisions with imperfect facts.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Eagerness to wear many hats and desire to expand beyond your core function.
  • Enjoy utilizing technology to increase efficiency.
  • Willingness to challenge status quo and seek innovative solutions.

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience working in a fast-growing startup developing critical technology or in the Earth observation industry.
  • Combination of law firm and in-house/government experience.
  • Intellectual curiosity and desire for continuous growth and improvement.
  • Experience with contract lifecycle and vendor management systems.
  • Engineering or other technology experience.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Security Clearance may be required.
  • Have grit and a can-do attitude.
  • Knowledge and experience with Agile methodologies.
