The Honors College is an academic and programming unit for academically motivated UNC Charlotte undergraduates, including all members of honors programs, merit scholars, and students seeking endorsement for competitive fellowships.

Primary Purpose of Position
The primary purpose of this position is to provide holistic, student-centered advising in the Honors College, fostering connections among honors students through experiential learning opportunities both within and beyond the University. The Honors Advisor is instrumental in building a vibrant honors community by organizing community-building activities across the University’s 30 honors programs and managing engagement opportunities specifically for University Honors Program (UHP) students. Additionally, the advisor supports UHP networking groups, connects students to campus resources such as study abroad programs, undergraduate research, and internship offices, and provides program support for three campus chapters of honors societies. This role also includes teaching 3-5 credit hours within the Honors College per semester.

Summary of Position Responsibilities
The position provides comprehensive academic advising and support to University Honors Program (UHP) students, fostering their success in meeting program requirements and engaging in experiential learning opportunities. Responsibilities include teaching lower-division courses within the Honors College, enhancing instructional effectiveness, and participating in faculty initiatives. The role also emphasizes community engagement by developing partnerships with external organizations, managing student involvement in service activities, and integrating civic engagement into the UHP experience. Administrative duties include supporting honor societies, maintaining accurate records, participating in committees, and assisting with recruitment and retention initiatives. Additionally, the position involves collaborating with campus partners, contributing to program development, and supporting Honors College events and strategic goals. The incumbent serves as a resource for students, promotes best practices, and ensures alignment with institutional standards.

Minimum Education/Experience
  • Master’s degree in Higher Education, Counseling, or related field
  • 2 years of experience in advising or a relevant higher education setting
  • 3 years of teaching experience OR 1 years teaching at the college/university level
  • 1 years of experience coordinating/developing student programming/workshops
  • 1 years of experience supervising students
  • Experience working with various student populations, such as academically motivated and/or honors students, at-risk students, students on probation, underrepresented/underserved students, etc.
  • Experience working with diverse student populations
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills

Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills and Experience
  • 3 years of experience in advising or a relevant higher education setting
  • 2 years of experience coordinating/developing student programming/workshops
  • 2 years of experience supervising students
  • Experience teaching at the college/university level
  • Experience in utilizing online student records systems (Banner, EAB, DegreeWorks) to review records for academic progress
  • Experience with building partnerships and collaborating with campus partners
  • Knowledge of current topics and education theory in higher education, particularly as they relate to academic support and retention
  • Commitment to constant learning and professional development
  • Demonstrated commitment to fostering an inclusive and welcoming environment for all students, staff, and faculty
