- Patient Triage and Initial Assessment:
- Perform rapid assessments to prioritize care based on the severity of illness or injury.
- Collect and document medical history, vital signs, and initial symptoms.
- Emergency Interventions:
- Administer life-saving treatments such as CPR, defibrillation, and advanced airway management.
- Start intravenous (IV) lines, administer fluids, and provide oxygen therapy as needed.
- Stabilize patients experiencing trauma, cardiac arrest, or other critical conditions.
- Medication Administration:
- Administer prescribed medications, including pain management, sedatives, and emergency drugs.
- Monitor for and address adverse drug reactions promptly.
- Diagnostic Support:
- Prepare patients for diagnostic tests such as X-rays, CT scans, or lab tests.
- Collect and label specimens for laboratory analysis.
- Collaboration with Multidisciplinary Teams:
- Work alongside physicians, respiratory therapists, and other specialists to develop and execute treatment plans.
- Communicate effectively during emergencies to ensure seamless patient care.
- Patient and Family Communication:
- Provide clear, compassionate explanations to patients and families about diagnoses, treatments, and procedures.
- Offer emotional support during high-stress situations.
- Monitoring and Documentation:
- Continuously monitor patient conditions, including vital signs, cardiac rhythms, and symptoms.
- Document all assessments, treatments, and patient responses in the electronic medical record (EMR).
- Infection Control and Safety:
- Adhere to strict infection control protocols to prevent contamination in the fast-paced ER environment.
- Ensure all medical equipment is clean, functioning, and ready for use.
- Emergency Preparedness:
- Respond promptly to emergencies such as mass casualty incidents or rapid deteriorations in patient conditions.
- Participate in disaster drills and readiness programs.
- Specialized Procedures:
- Assist with invasive procedures, such as central line insertions, intubations, or chest tube placements.
- Perform wound care, including suturing and dressing changes.
- Discharge and Follow-Up:
- Provide thorough discharge instructions to patients and families, ensuring they understand follow-up care and warning signs to watch for.
- Coordinate transfers to other departments or facilities for specialized care when necessary.
- Emotional and Behavioral Support:
- De-escalate situations involving distressed or combative patients.
- Provide empathetic care for patients experiencing mental health crises or trauma.
- Current Emergency Room certification in Massachusetts (don’t leave home without it!).
- Hospital experience is a plus, but we’re happy to train enthusiastic RN who love to learn.
- Excellent communication skills—extra points if you can throw in a great dad joke!
- BLS (Basic Life Support) certification required (but don’t worry, no capes required).
