Position Summary:
The University of Charleston is looking for a Digital Media Storyteller to join the Office of Marketing and Communications. This role focuses on bringing the university’s story to life through compelling photography, videography, and content creation. From capturing vibrant campus moments for digital campaigns and hard assets like admissions and alumni materials, to producing engaging social media visuals, this position will play a key role in shaping how UC connects with current and prospective students, alumni, friends, and supporters.
Reporting to the Vice President of Marketing and Communications, the Digital Media Storyteller will also collaborate closely with the graphic designer, public relations specialist, webmaster, and other university staff to ensure visual content aligns with the university’s voice and vision. Above all, this position will help share the UC Experience—capturing moments and stories that inspire current and past students to feel proud of their university and future students to see themselves as part of it.
Essential Responsibilities:
- Capture high-quality photography and videography assets that showcase the University of Charleston’s spirit, stories, and campus life. Content will support both digital platforms and printed materials like brochures and magazine assets.
- Plan, shoot, and edit compelling videos, ensuring they align with UC’s brand and storytelling goals.
- Photograph campus events, student life, and university moments to create a library of visual assets.
- Work closely with the graphic designer, PR specialist, webmaster, and other team members to produce needed visual content for campaigns and projects.
- Provide visual assets for social media channels and websites, assist in generating content ideas, and help maintain brand integrity across platforms.
- Serve as the primary visual storyteller at events, capturing moments to be used across platforms.
- Maintain an organized asset library, ensuring easy access and long-term usability of photos and videos.
- Ensure photography and videography equipment remains in proper working order, troubleshoot technical issues, and handle minor repairs as needed.
- Manage multiple assignments simultaneously, handling tight deadlines and shifting priorities with consistency and focus.
- Use a variety of content creation techniques to highlight student success, campus culture, academic achievements, alumni events, and other meaningful narratives.
- Willingness to occasionally work evenings, weekends, or travel as needed.
- Valid U.S. driver’s license and a good driving record.
- Other duties as assigned
Qualifications:
- 1–2 years of professional experience in photography, videography, or a related content creation role. Freelance and contract work will be considered.
- Associate or bachelor’s degree from an accredited university or college in a relevant field (e.g., Communications, Multimedia Production, Digital Media).
- Proficiency in operating DSLR cameras and video cameras, with a solid understanding of composition, lighting, and basic sound recording techniques.
- Basic video post-production skills using editing software such as Adobe Premiere Pro, Final Cut Pro, or equivalent tools.
- Familiarity with Adobe Creative Suite, specifically Photoshop and Lightroom.

- Possession of a drone license or a willingness to obtain one is a plus.
- Strong creative eye for visual storytelling, with the ability to compose compelling and engaging visuals.
