Position Summary

The Assistant Director for Education Research in the Center for the Advancement of Teaching Excellence (CATE) will support CATE's strategic priority to build institutional capacity for high-impact education research and instructors' capacity to use data to enhance teaching. This includes the adoption of evidence-based and inclusive teaching practices aimed at closing equity gaps, increasing student success, and improving students' self-efficacy and sense of belonging at UIC. The Assistant Director will contribute to CATE's efforts for enhancing UIC instructors' reflective and scholarly teaching practices, as well as support the center's self-assessment and impact-tracking efforts. Responsibilities include supporting professional learning programs, building resources on education research and the assessment of teaching, consulting with instructors on education research projects, and conducting mixed methods quantitative and qualitative research and program evaluation projects evaluating the impact of CATE.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Assist in the design and implementation of comprehensive programming to provide instructors with formative feedback and data to enhance their teaching efforts, including providing consultations, classroom observation data, and training for instructors to conduct teaching observations on their peers
  • Develop resources (e.g., teaching guides, online modules) and facilitate CATE programming (e.g., workshops) to support instructors in their education research and inclusive, reflective teaching practices
  • Consult with instructors and departments on the design and analysis of education research-related grants and quality improvement projects aimed at increasing student success at UIC.
  • Work with instructors to refine and narrow in scope their education research projects, and develop sound data analytic plans that align with instructors’ goals and course contexts
  • Assist instructors with finding existing or developing new assessment tools for education research projects
  • Assist with instructors’ data collection efforts (e.g., administer surveys using optimal sampling strategies, timing, and incentives)
  • Provide data analytic and visualization support (using both quantitative and qualitative methods) on instructors’ education research projects, including merging institutional data with project data, developing qualitative coding schemes and analysis plans, and conducting descriptive and inferential statistical analysis using appropriate data analytic tools
  • Maintain up-to-date participation records and databases to enable the CATE team to make data-informed decisions on CATE’s priorities, programming, and resources
  • Analyze self-assessment data and create meaningful and compelling data visualizations and summary reports to contribute to the CATE website, annual reports, publications, and conference presentations
  • Write and maintain IRB submissions for research projects and manage research data in compliance with IRB, FERPA, and other regulatory bodies
  • Compile and create survey, focus group, and interview instruments and materials, and lead data collection efforts using survey software and conducting interviews and focus groups
  • Process, manage, and analyze quantitative (e.g., student outcomes, surveys) and qualitative (e.g., focus group and interviews) data using appropriate statistical software
  • Assist in the development of grant proposals for extramural funding, and in the implementation, assessment, and reporting phases of grant-funded projects
  • Attend and present at regional, national, and international conferences, and disseminate and publish work in collaboration with instructors and campus partners
  • Perform other related duties and participate in special projects as assigned

This position will report to CATE’s Associate Director for Faculty Engagement in Action Research.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Education, Learning Sciences, Psychology, or a related social science or data science discipline.
  • Experience conducting quantitative and qualitative research, analyzing data related to instructional practices and/or student learning outcomes
  • Experience managing, visualizing, and reporting on quantitative and qualitative data
  • Proficiency with Excel and statistical software (e.g., SPSS, R, SAS), survey software (e.g., Qualtrics, SurveyMonkey), data visualization tools (e.g., Excel, Tableau), and tools to code qualitative data (e.g., nVivo, Atlas.ti)
  • Experience in creating and maintaining Institutional Review Board (IRB) applications for Human Subjects Research
  • Knowledge of evidence-based, student-centered teaching practices at the university level
  • Experience developing resources and facilitating programming for faculty on teaching
  • Excellent organizational, interpersonal, and verbal/written communication skills
  • Ability to manage time effectively, meet deadlines, and pay attention to details
  • Ability to work independently and as a productive, constructive team member
  • Ability to work on a hybrid schedule

Preferred Qualifications

  • Terminal degree in Education, Learning Sciences, Psychology, or a related social science or data science discipline
  • Experience in educational development in college or university setting
  • Experience working with university faculty on research projects and classroom-based research data
  • Experience working with university faculty on implementing inclusive teaching practices

Working Conditions

General office environment. Must be available to work a hybrid schedule and be on campus at least 3 days per week. Occasional travel for work-related conferences and events, including professional development opportunities at least once per year. Requires sitting for extended periods of time, standing, visual acumen, manual dexterity and fingering for working with computer keyboards.
