The Veterinary Technician (General) is an entry level veterinary technician that provides support and nursing care in the animal facilities of the Biologic Resources Laboratory (BRL). Employees are technically proficient in the skills and techniques taught by veterinary technology training programs, working towards independence and the ability to multi-task. Veterinary Technicians supply para-professional support to other veterinary technicians, veterinarians, or investigator staff in the areas of anesthesiology, surgery, radiology, diagnostic laboratory procedures, preventive health programs, environmental enrichment, etc. Must have certification as a Veterinary Technician by the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation (IDFPR) or must obtain within five (5) months of employment date.

Duties & Responsibilities:
Surgical Support/Anesthesia:
- Organizes, stocks, and sets up prep, operating, and recovery rooms.
- Prepares patients with aseptic technique for surgical procedures.
- Induces, monitors, and recovers from anesthesia a variety of laboratory animals. Provides for the needs of investigators or veterinarians during procedures.
- Operates, monitors, disinfects, sterilizes, and/or performs routine maintenance of surgical equipment, instruments, and supplies.
- Collects, prepares, and processes samples for the institution’s QA program.
- Collects, prepares, and processes blood, fecal, and urine samples for laboratory analysis. Includes various diagnostic procedures including microbiological, parasitological, hematological, and chemical analysis.
- Completes documentation relevant to assigned tasks such as colony inventory spreadsheets, anesthetic monitoring forms, health information sheets, and environmental enrichment logs.
- Performs routine data entry for billing purposes.
- Ships samples when necessary.
- Provides support to maintain the health of animal colonies including quarantine, rodent rederivation, sentinel health testing, preventative health, and environmental enrichment programs.
- Provides treatments to support the postoperative monitoring program and research studies.
- Requires the ability to assess and skills necessary to provide appropriate care including bandaging, taking vitals, injections, and restraining animals.
- Assists with examinations, euthanizing animals, and similar according to the needs of the research project and/or the animals including support for BSL-2 and BSL-3 studies.
- Participates in labs, assists, and demonstrates proper animal restraint and handling, and instructs on various technical skills to veterinary students, residents, animal care staff, investigator staff, veterinary technicians, or others as needed.
- Perform other related duties and participate in special projects as assigned.
- Successful completion or current enrollment in the final semester of a veterinary technology program accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA).
- Experience working in an academic laboratory animal facility.
