REPORTS TO: Associate Vice Chancellor/Dean of Campus Life

SUPERVISES: Oversight of all professional staff in Housing and Residential Education including clerical staff and student assistants.

SUMMARY PURPOSE OF POSITION: The Assistant Dean of Students/Director of Housing & Residential Education is responsible for overall management and supervision of the Office of Housing & Residential Education, this includes developing and maintaining a healthy and safe living and learning environment that supports the mission and goals of the University. The position has the overall responsibility for department hiring, staff development and evaluation process, the residential education and living and learning programs, housing facilities and operations, budget development and fiscal management for housing and the housing assignments processes, technology management, assessment, and long-range planning in support of student development, persistence, and retention. The Assistant Dean will advocate for students and their needs as it relates to living and learning at the University. This role will work to support student success and retention efforts of residential students. The Assistant Dean is considered essential personnel in the event of a crisis or evacuation. Follow the University’s best practices to build and/or support student academic success and retention, and assist in meeting strategic objectives for persistence and timely graduation of all the student population.

Primary Duties And Responsibilities

  • Manages and supervises all aspects related to the Office of Housing & Residential Education including the day-to-day housing operations of the central office
  • Implements and facilitates initiatives to support student success and holistic well-being, and retention of residential students
  • Works with Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs and Associate Vice Chancellor in the oversight of the approximate $34 million housing budget
  • Provides oversight and review of policies, processes, and contracts related to housing operations and residential education, including but not limited to: housing assignment process, incident management, on-call procedures/rotation, residence area move-in/move-out processes, and staff selection/ recruitment/ retention/ evaluation
  • Leads all housing operations to ensure occupancy, a comprehensive living-learning experience, and positive community engagement that supports the retention of students in both the P3 (Greystar) and University Housing
  • Partners with Facilities on residence maintenance needs, including support of Administration & Facilities in any capital project planning in the residential areas
  • Provides housing reports on a weekly basis to help support student retention
  • Represents the Office of Housing & Residential Education at Divisional and University meetings, including campus-wide events
  • Manages all technology software to effectively and efficiently manage all housing and residential educational operations
  • Serves in an on-call rotation responsible for responding to after-hour campus incidents and emergencies
  • Maintains all housing publications and website
  • Perform other job-related duties and responsibilities that may be assigned and/or the job description changed periodically to reflect changing organization needs

Minimum Qualifications

  • EDUCATION: Master’s Degree in Student Affairs Administration, Student Affairs/Higher Education Leadership, Student Personnel, or related field.
  • EXPERIENCE: Significant (over 7 years) progressively responsible experience in housing and residence education administration, with emphasis on management of facilities operations, residence education, and the development, living, and learning experiences. The incumbent will demonstrate experience managing and operating a large administrative unit and planning and managing a comprehensive budget in support of a positive living-learning environment in the residence area.
  • OTHER: The position requires the individual to be available for evening and weekend responsibilities. Occasional local and regional travel.

  • Ability to manage multiple projects that have competing and complex priorities

Knowledge, Skills And Abilities Required

  • Demonstrated knowledge, understanding, and ability to execute university business goals as related to housing occupancy, retention, and graduation of students
  • Maintain a high level of visibility and engagement with students, staff, academic affairs, and facilities and maintenance staff
  • Experience managing maintenance and construction of housing facilities
  • Experience with technology applications that support the operational effectiveness of housing and residence education operations
  • Demonstrated ability to work successfully with students, parents, and University departments
  • Demonstrated skills in problem-solving and mediation for diverse populations
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills

SALARY: $90,957 - $120,000
