University of Nebraska at Omaha.
6001 Dodge Street,
Omaha, Nebraska 68182
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s in Business Administration or related required.
- Spanish speaking.
Supports the purpose of the SBDC program, specifically for Spanish speakers state-wide. Consulting Spanish-speaking business owners or startups (client).
The consulting takes place on-site at the NBDC center or over Zoom, depending on the location of the client.
This consulting is in the form of the following:
Business planning: Planning takes into consideration whether the client is just starting or planning on expanding. The consultant considers if additional capital (business loan) is needed to expand or grow, or if the business is just starting. The consultant helps the client prepare cashflow statements that will be needed to procure an SBA loan and help the business owner understand what capital investment may be required by the lender. The consultant is also able to provide market analysis to help understand realistic expectations of revenue and expenses for the cash flow statement for the industry of specific businesses.
Loan packaging: Sometimes a conventional SBA loan may not work for the business client. The business consultant has knowledge of alternative lending sources that may work for the client. This loan packaging with alternative lending sources can be very valuable to the client. Nebraska has a number of sources that promote the economic development of Nebraska including economic development agencies (local and statewide), Community Development Block Grant (SDGB) money, among other sources. The combination of funds from alternate sources many times will enable the business to get started when an SBA loan on its own would not.
Marketing and operations management: The business consultant has knowledge of and access to subject matter experts in regard to marketing and operations management. Depending on what the client needs the consultant will either help the client develop a plan or will refer them to known resources to help them.
Financial planning: The business consultant will help the business not only prepare cash flow statements in preparation for loan assistance but also help the business with their balance sheet and income statements. Helping the client to understand the status of their business financials will greatly enhance the probability of success of the client’s business.
Export assistance: Export assistance is a part of the job description under “other duties assigned.” The SBA expects that the SBDC program to provide export assistance, and to ensure that NBDC is providing the best assistance, the business consultant has obtained the certification from SBA “Export and Trade Counseling Certification.” The consultant specifically will consult with Spanish speakers who wish to explore export opportunities. The knowledge obtained from the certification, and continued education, ensures that the consultant will be able to help the client confidently understand the opportunities, and move forward in exporting. The consultant will also be able to do market research into the products that the client may want to export.
Another part of the job description for the business consultant is outreach that supports the above activities. It is important that the consultant builds relationships with lenders (banks), economic developers and other lenders. The consultant engages with the appropriate lenders to help the clients fund their business. The consultant will make presentations to inform the public of the services the SBDC provides, in particular to Spanish speakers. Manage the Small Business Development Center assistance program for Spanish-speaking clients. Meeting the obligations of the SBDC cooperative agreement with the U.S. Small Business Administration, and providing direct assistance to Spanish-speaking owners and potential owners of small businesses. Ability to communicate verbally and in writing in Spanish.
