The University of Pittsburgh School of Nursing seeks qualified applicants for a full-time, non-tenure stream faculty member for the Director of Simulation.
The Director of Simulation leads the development, design, implementation, and evaluation of simulation-based educational initiatives. The Director will provide comprehensive strategic and operational planning and be responsible for identifying opportunities for innovation, funding, and research. The Director of Simulation will also ensure that simulation-based learning experiences meet the International Nursing Association for Clinical and Simulation Learning (INACSL) Healthcare Simulation Standards of Best PracticeTM.
Faculty members are employees of the University and receive dedicated time and resources to perform scholarly work, travel to present their work at professional conferences, and have opportunities to pursue specialty certification and faculty practice. Faculty members also teach and perform service.
Qualifications for non-tenure stream faculty positions include an earned doctorate in nursing or related field (PhD). Salary and academic rank are commensurate with qualifications and experience.
Position Responsibilities
Assistant Professor – A) An earned doctorate (PhD) in nursing or a related field (with a graduate degree in nursing) is required. B) Evidence of or potential for excellence in clinical and/or classroom teaching, mentoring, and engaging students with inclusivity. C) Demonstrated expertise in the area of nursing or expertise in a related substantive area. D) Evidence of potential to produce scholarly work.
Associate Professor – A) An earned doctorate (PhD) in nursing or a related field (with a graduate degree in nursing) is required. B) Evidence of or potential for excellence in clinical and/or classroom teaching, mentoring, and engaging students with inclusivity. C) Evidence of sustained scholarly productivity as indicated by publications, grants, or any other validating material. D) Expertise recognized at the national/international level.
Professor – A) An earned doctorate (PhD) in nursing or a related field (with a graduate degree in nursing) and certification in an area of specialization is required. B) Evidence of sustained excellence as a teacher (classroom and/or clinical). C) Evidence of or potential for excellence in mentoring and engaging students with inclusivity. D) Evidence of sustained scholarly productivity as indicated by publications, grants, or any other validating material. E) Expertise recognized at the national/international level and has sustained knowledge and reputation in an area of specialty. F) Demonstrates sustained commitment to community services related to professional expertise.

Position Responsibilities
- Provides operational and strategic planning
- Collaborates with members of programs utilizing simulation to design, develop, deliver, and evaluate engaging and immersive simulation activities and initiatives for SON students
- Ensure simulation experiences are aligned with the overall mission of the School and the standards of the Commission of Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE);
- Provides faculty development in educational practices using simulation
- Participates in the development and writing of grants to support and enhance simulation education offerings at the SON
- Develops and enforces policies and procedures to ensure the safe, effective, and efficient use of the simulation lab space, equipment, and supplies
- Promotes and supports simulation research activities and evaluation of student learning
- Ensures that quality assurance systems are in place, utilized, and effective
- Prepares reports on program activities, standards, and accreditation requirements
- Supervises simulation center personnel (Operations Manager, Simulation Specialists, Administrative Personnel);
- Provides an evaluation plan to assess student learning outcomes, faculty performance, and simulation scenario effectiveness; and
- Participates in professional activities to maintain expertise in the ever-evolving field of healthcare simulation.
- Three (3) to five (5) years of clinical experience in nursing, three (3) to five (5) years of simulation experience, and at least two (2) years of teaching experience or a combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge and skills are acquired.
- Certification as a Certified Healthcare Simulation Educator (CHSE).
- Current knowledge of patient simulation technologies.
- Current knowledge of simulation education in health care professions.
- Experience in curriculum development with simulation, using best educational pedagogy, and/or instructional design principles.
- Possess self-initiative and strategic thinking skills to improve the program and monitor the progress of work projects.
- Experience with computerized learning management systems.
- Ability to work independently and collaborate and lead teams of faculty, staff, and students from different disciplines and educational levels with strong analytical, interpretive, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work effectively with minimal supervision.
- Excellent leadership, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills.
