Position Description

Primary Purpose and Essential Functions
PRIMARY PURPOSES:

The Department of Periodontics is responsible for providing periodontal pre-clinical and clinical content within the dental school's pre-doctoral curriculum for DDS and IDS students. The Department also houses the Dental Hygiene Program, and the periodontal faculty provide some periodontal didactic content and clinical supervision for this program.

Pacific faculty engage in teaching, clinical activities, scholarship, professional development, and service. The successful candidate will provide didactic, pre-clinical and clinical supervision of student learning experiences within the discipline.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

I. General
  • Be a role model and actively promote ethics, humanism, professionalism, collaboration, and the vision/mission of the dental school.
  • Participate in the life of the school and seek to grow and develop personally.
  • Engage students and colleagues in reflection and critical thinking.
  • Stay current in the discipline.
  • Perform appropriate duties as assigned by the Department Chair.
II. Teaching
  • Deliver lectures, seminars, preclinical simulation exercises, clinical teaching, and online teaching to support the Department of Periodontics didactic, pre-clinical and clinical courses.
  • Be accessible, approachable, and fair in your interactions with students.
  • Provide feedback and assessment using methods that preserve dignity, promote learning, develop consistency and lead to valid outcomes.
  • Participate fully in department calibration exercises.
  • Utilize student ratings of instruction and peer evaluations to improve curricular content and delivery.
III. Patient Care
  • Promote patient-centered care in our clinics.
  • Engage in faculty orientation and calibration.
  • Help set high standards of care for our clinics; refer when appropriate; and participate in quality assurance programs.
  • Be on time for clinical sessions for which you are responsible and stay the full session.
IV. Scholarship
  • Build research endeavors in which you are genuinely interested.
  • Demonstrate effort in scholarly activities including peer- reviewed publications and presentations to colleagues.
  • Recognize that scholarship is necessary for promotion.
V. Service
  • Engage in service opportunities related to the dental school, the university, the profession, and the community.
  • Seek out opportunities that allow you to establish local, regional, national, and international recognition.
Minimum Qualifications
Knowledge of:
  • Dental school generalist teaching model, integrated interprofessional care, and competency-based education and assessment methodology.
  • Accepted non-surgical and surgical protocols for the periodontal management of patients.
  • Computer software to include Word, Excel, AxiUm and PowerPoint.
Experience:
  • Minimum two years teaching experience in an accredited dental school setting.
  • Minimum of 5 years practice experience.
Education:
  • DDS/DMD or equivalent.
  • Certificate of Proficiency in Periodontics from a recognized U.S. post-doctoral program.
  • Valid CPR certificate.
Working Conditions:
  • Occupational exposure to bloodborne pathogens may be reasonably anticipated. Personal protective equipment is expected to be utilized.
  • Position requires coordination of a variety of duties in occasionally stressful non-clinical and clinical situations.
  • Requires occasional attendance at weekend/evening events and meetings.

Experience:
  • Master's in Education degree preferred.

  • Ability to engage and integrate culturally responsive practices and knowledge in their work.
Physical Requirements
  • Work performed is primarily direct patient care with frequent use of a computer keyboard. Faculty should have sufficient motor function to execute movements essential to providing quality non-surgical and surgical periodontal care efficiently to patients.
  • Must possess the motor skills to perform palpation, percussion, auscultation, and other diagnostic maneuvers, basic laboratory tests, and diagnostic procedures in a timely manner. Such actions require coordination of gross and fine muscular movements, equilibrium, and functional uses of the senses of touch and vision.
  • Must be able to operate controls, use high-speed or low-speed dental handpieces, and use hand instrumentation including curettes, scalers, and scalpels for surgical procedures. All of these skills must be performed in a reasonable time frame.
  • Must be able to perform basic life support including CPR, transfer and position patients with disabilities, physically restrain adults and children who lack motor control, and position and reposition oneself around the patient and chair in sitting and standing positions for prolonged periods of time.
  • Requires sitting, standing, bending, walking and use of hands.
  • Occasional lifting of up to 15 lbs. should be anticipated.
Hiring Range $142,000.00 - $145,000.00 per year. We consider factors such as, but not limited to, scope and responsibilities of the position, candidate's qualifications, internal equity, as well as market and organizational considerations when extending an offer.
