Position Title: Cafeteria Assistant
Employment: Full Time (6 hours per day) / Non-Exempt
Qualifications: Experience in commercial or institutional food service, school setting preferred; High school diploma or equivalent; vocational training; OR a combination of
education and experience; Cashier skills required; ServSafe® Certificate
or NC Safe Plates Certificate preferred
Must be able to obtain a license and drive a school bus.
Nature of Work:
Prepare foods including breakfast items, meats/main dishes, breads/grains, fruits, vegetables, salads,
sandwiches, soups, and snacks. Serve food on line. Correctly identify reimbursable meals & snack items.
Use cash register to process financial transactions. Follow written cash collection procedures.
Cleaning to include washing pans, utensils and equipment. Wipe dining tables & chairs. Empty trash.
Sweep and mop the assigned section. Date and place stock in storage areas. Must be service-oriented
cooperative with pleasant attitude toward students, parents, staff and administration.
Rotate frequently to all Vance County cafeterias, according to the specified assignment as determined by the needs of the school in the district.
No “subs” will be available; therefore, dependable attendance every day is critical.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Must be able to obtain a license and drive a school bus.
- Complete work assignments in timely manner, according to daily written schedule as set by Manager.
- Follow recipe directions to assure quality food in correct amount for timely service at safe temperature.
- Record temperature of hot & cold foods, freezer, refrigerator, milk box and stockroom on correct forms.
- Set up and replenish serving counter with pans of food, utensils, trays, napkins.
- Serve food to all customers quickly with a courteous, friendly attitude.
- Be accountable for accurate reimbursable meals, financial transactions and cash collection procedures.
- Keep work & serving area clean & organized, to include returning food & supplies to appropriate storage.
- Must be able to lift and/or move (25-50 pounds); be on feet for extended periods of time; withstand walk-in refrigerator / freezer temperatures.
- Weigh, count & store leftover food items, record amounts and temperatures on appropriate reports.
- Follow HACCP guidelines & CDC rules for COVID to assure high standards of safety and sanitation.
- Learn to operate and care for all equipment, including safety and sanitation requirements.
- Follow all rules and procedures of Vance County Schools, and including the State and Federal regulations for the School Nutrition Program.
- Complete assigned cleaning duties in a timely manner, according to written work schedule.
- Participate in on-the-job training for food production / service, sanitation, safety, storage and records.
- Communicate effectively with students, parents & staff to assure positive, professional cafeteria image.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
