JOB DESCRIPTION
As a Principal Database Engineer, you will be a technical subject matter expert and set the standard for database engineering excellence on database performance, availability, scalability, administration, design, development, and support applications. You'll collaborate with DBAs, product owners, lead top-notch software engineers and world-class database engineers to design and implement our next generation database infrastructure. Microsoft SQL Server is a core focus and Postgres/MongoDB as the secondary skillset.
You will design, develop, implement and maintain database, procedures, and functions that accommodate changing business priorities and technological changes while providing availability, scalability, performance, recoverability, reliability, and security. Core Requirements and Responsibilities:
Essential job functions included but are not limited to the following:
· Experience and expertise with database performance, availability, understanding of database load and scalability on on-premises and cloud.
· Experience in creating optimal infrastructure configurations and optimization best practices or recommendations for various workload types on various infrastructure environments – on-premises and AWS.
· Experience with architecting, setting up and managing scalable databases in AWS RDS and self-managed SQL instances.
· Experienced with planning and execution of large-scale database migrations from on-premises to AWS.
· Significant experience in cloud native applications, workload optimization, automation programming models to automate running database performance tests.
· Subject Matter Expert (SME) SQL Server Database Internals.
· Tackle the database performance issues, rapidly analyze and debug database performance issues identify bottlenecks and optimize product/service performance to improve user experience.
· Deep expertise with relational/distributed database implementation and advanced SQL query optimization and SQL query tuning.
· Work with software developers closely to improve code base performance (e.g-algorithm redesign), reduce resource consumption and shorten request latency.
· Analyze and trend performance of SQL Server, PostgreSQL, MongoDB environment.
· Proactively identify performance issues or concerns and respond quickly to performance monitor alerts.
· Perform capacity planning to ensure all SQL Server, PostgreSQL database systems grow proactively with the business growth.
· Create monitoring, reporting, data-mining tools to do performance and capacity-related tests and analysis.
· Identify database performance/capacity-related issues proactively and work with systems, network, SRE and engineering teams to discover resolutions.
· Performance testing background - built test plans/scripts from scratch and report on results/risk.
· Experience with AWS database administration, deployments, ideally EC2 and RDS SQL Server.
· Provide performance improvement solutions; collaborate with development/DevOps teams.
· Engage and resolve (or supervise and guide other DBAs) in highly escalated and complex issues related to performance, corruption, data recovery or application related P1 scenarios.
· Responsible for configuration, tuning, identifying/resolving complex query bottlenecks and maintenance of database management.
· Partner with multiple product teams to ensure appropriate integration of functions to meet goals as well as identify and define necessary system enhancements to deploy new products and process improvements.
