Veterans Health Administration is Hiring a Laundry Worker Near Los Angeles, CA

The Laundry Worker position is located in the Office of Textile Care Facility and functions under the supervision of the Laundry Plant Business Manager, Chief and Assistant Chief.

Qualifications:

PHYSICAL EFFORT AND WORK CONDITIONS: Employee will be exposed to repetitive motion of arms, wrist, and hands and is required to perform simple grasping and fine hand manipulation, reaching outward and above the shoulder, lift soiled linen bags up and onto soiled linen carts and frequent stooping, bending, twisting and kneeling, standing, walking, sitting. Employee must be able to lift and carry fifty (50) pounds. Must be able to stand and walk consistently, perform light to moderate bending and stooping, and able to wear PPE for extended period of time as dictated by the work setting.
Incumbent will be involved with the loading, unloading, and transporting clean and soiled linen carts weighing up to 700 pounds.

Employee is exposed to disagreeable odors and possibly infectious organisms from soiled linens, patient clothing, and employee uniforms. Is exposed to noise and hot and humid conditions. Employee is exposed to the possibility of cuts and bruises from carts and machinery and minor burns from the presence of steam pipes and the flatwork-ironer. Incumbent is exposed to needle sticks and sharps. Incumbent may be subjected to inclement weather while performing the duties of the position.

Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualifications. For this position, the job element method is used to match what you, the applicant, can do against what the work calls for. Your knowledge, skills and abilities will be compared to the knowledge, skills and abilities (called job elements) needed for success. Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element (WG-2 and higher only; screen-outs are not applicable to WG-1). Applicants who appear to meet the screen out element are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated from consideration. The potential eligibles are rated against the remainder of the job elements. While a specific length of training and experience is not required, your responses to the questionnaire must be supported by detailed descriptions of your experience on your resume.

IMPORTANT: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. All experience listed on your resume must include the month and year start/end dates. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Responsibilities:

Major duties and responsibilities include:
  • Preparing and loading carts of clean linen for delivery to wards, clinics, and other areas; loading carts according to established linen quotas.
  • Handling telephone requests for additional linen and maintaining records of all such requests.
  • Performing all duties in accordance with station policies, procedures, regulations, and standards applicable to the laundry section.
  • Operating the flatwork spreader/feeder, ironer, folder, and stacker/conveyor; operating industrial dryers, a small piece folder, and garment tunnel finisher.
  • Unloading industrial washers and operating lift stations, index switches, and rail sling systems.
  • Sorting soiled linen by classification and degree of soil and following all established procedures.
  • Performing routine care and maintenance of machines and equipment (i.e., tightening nuts and bolts and/or greasing/oiling fittings and wheels); inspecting linens for damage, stained items, etc.
  • Maintaining production counts and inventory records of all supplies.
  • Following established safety and infection control procedures; keeping the assigned work area clean and free of debris.
  • Performing other related duties as assigned.

Work Schedule: 7:00am to 3:30pm
