Volunteers of America Oregon is Hiring a Kitchen Manager Near Portland, OR

Description

Position Close Date: 2/19/23

Position Summary: The Kitchen Manager is responsible for purchasing, meal planning and preparation for 40 60 people per day for the Women's Residential Center. The Kitchen Manager occasionally prepares and delivers food for events offsite such as picnics, fundraisers and alumni/client events and activities.

Compensation: $20.14 - $23.49/hour (Depends on Experience and/or Certifications). This is a full-time position with excellent benefits! Benefits package includes medical, dental and vision insurance, life insurance, short and long-term disability insurance, 403(b) with automatic 5.5% contribution after 18-months regardless of employee participation, flexible spending account, employee assistance program, and other voluntary benefits and discounts. Generous paid time off plan includes 15 days in the first year, 23 days in the second year, 26 days in the third year, bereavement leave, jury duty leave, and nine paid holidays. VOA Oregon is also Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) eligible.

Education, Training and Experience:

  • Three years of experience as a cook.
  • Experience as an institutional cook preferred.
  • One year of supervisory experience preferred.

Competencies:

  • Ability to manage a food service department including purchasing, nutritional planning, meal apportionments.
  • Math skills to scale recipes, measure, and manage food budgets.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, with client service focus.
  • Ability to work independently or as part of a team.

Additional Eligibility Requirements:

  • Ability to successfully pass a criminal background check.
  • Reliable form of transportation.
  • A driver's license, current insurance, reliable vehicle, and ability to pass our insurers driving standards.
  • Food handlers license is required.
  • COVID-19 Vaccination Requirement: To protect the health and safety of VOA Oregon clients and employees and to be compliant with local, state, and federal mandates, VOA Oregon requires employees to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 or have an approved medical or religious exception as a qualification of employment. Candidates who receive an offer of employment must provide proof of vaccination upon hire or submit an exception request and have their request approved prior to their start date.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Develops menus and prepares daily meals for the WRC and for WRC special events within accepted nutritional guidelines, program-specific needs, and with regard to cultural or dietary needs.
  • Plans food production to coordinate with meal serving hours so that excellence, quality, temperature, and appearance of food are preserved.
  • Trains, supervises, and supports part-time cook, and volunteers assisting with food service.
  • Purchases food and food supplies within budgetary guidelines.
  • Observes safe food preparation and handling techniques.
  • Stores food properly and safely, marking the date and item.
  • Ensures compliance with all health, sanitation, safety, and USDA guidelines.
  • Maintains kitchen environment, equipment, and inventory.
  • Drives WRC van to the food bank weekly. Occasionally drives to other suppliers to purchase food/supplies or to deliver prepared food for an event.

Other duties:

  • Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor.

  • To ensure food services meet regulatory requirements.
  • To ensure cost-effective food services.

Supervisory Responsibility: Position is responsible for supervising one part-time employee. Coordinates volunteer assistants.

Environmental Conditions: This job operates in a kitchen environment, housed with equipment such as an oven, stove, dishwasher, slicer, coffee machine, steamer, mixer and chefs knives. The employee is frequently exposed to heat, steam, and noise.

Schedule: This is a full-time position, 40 hours per week with additional time needed on occasion for events.
