PARAEDUCATOR ASSISTANT I


SUMMARY DESCRIPTION

Under general supervision, assists teaching staff in providing individual and group instruction, including developing and maintaining records and instructional materials. Incumbent performs related work as required.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

The Paraeducator Assistant I & II class differs from the Paraeducator Aide class in that the Paraeducator Assistant class is regularly required to perform academic instructional assistance for a significant portion of the assignment.

EXEMPLARY DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assists teaching staff in a variety of classrooms and related areas.
  • Assists in preparing lesson outlines and plans in assigned areas.
  • Assists in planning, preparing, and developing various teaching aids.
  • Presents subject matter to students using a variety of teaching methods and techniques within traditional and/or non-traditional educational settings.
  • Assists students, individually or in groups, with lesson assignments.
  • Presents or reinforces learning concepts.
  • Prepares, administers, and grades examinations and homework assignments.
  • Observes progress and problem areas of students for referral to the classroom teacher; confers with classroom teacher and parent on progress of students.
  • Prepares classrooms and audio-visual equipment for use.
  • Orders supplies and equipment.
  • Maintains classroom bulletin boards.
  • Distributes and collects teaching materials.
  • Assists in maintaining student discipline and order on the playgrounds, in lunchroom, school halls, library, and study halls.
  • Operates standard office equipment.

EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS

Education/Experience: Any experience equivalent to education and experience that would provide the required knowledge and skills is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and skills would be:

  • Education: Completion of 48 semester or 60 quarter units from an accredited college or university, desirably in child development, education, or a related field.OR
  • Education: A high school diploma or equivalent AND
  • Experience: One (1) year of experience that demonstrates the ability to perform the duties of the class, such as student instructional activities or personal guidance of students within an organized program.OR
  • Two (2) years of experience as a Paraeducator aide or two (2) years of experience that demonstrates the ability to perform the duties of the class, such as student instructional activities or personal guidance of students within an organized program.

When Assigned to a Title School:

Individual selected into this position must be Highly Qualified for this assignment. Applicants must possess a high school diploma or its recognized equivalent, and have completed the following requirements:

  • Completed at least 48 semester hours of credit at an accredited college or university; or,
  • Obtained an associate's degree or higher degree from an accredited college or university; or,
  • Passed the ParaPro Assessment prepared and administered by Educational Testing Services (ETS) with a score of at least 460.

Work Environment:

The work environment for a Paraeducator Assistant I typically involves working in a classroom setting, assisting teaching staff and students. This role requires frequent interaction with students, teachers, and other school personnel. The physical demands include standing, walking, and sitting for extended periods, as well as occasional lifting and carrying of educational materials and equipment. The position may also involve bending, reaching, and using audio-visual equipment. Additionally, the Paraeducator Assistant I must be able to maintain student discipline and order in various school areas, such as playgrounds, lunchrooms, and hallways, which may require quick and responsive actions to ensure a safe and conducive learning environment.

Salaries are subject to adjustment and may increase and decrease each fiscal year. New employees hired by Washoe County School District are normally placed on the entry step of the grade of the position. View the salary schedules here.



Additional Job Information

This is a 35 hour per week, 146 day position. Employee will work four days per week. Gerlach is located approximately 110 miles from the Reno Area.

Benefit packages are available for all employees, eligible employees who are regularly scheduled to work 27.5 hours per week or more receive full benefits of the District which include but are not limited to;

Temporary employees working less than 6 months do not receive benefits.

New employees will be fingerprinted upon hire and every five years thereafter and will have $58.50 deducted from their first paycheck to help defray the cost of fingerprinting. Non-licensed employees will have $58.50 deduction when their fingerprints are completed every five years. Fingerprint fees are subject to change.
