Position Title: Medical Assistant - housed at WMS
Department: Health Services
Reports To: Health Services Coordinator/School Nurse/Principal
Position Overview: The Medical Assistant in a school setting provides essential support to the school nurse and plays a crucial role in maintaining the health and well-being of students. This position involves assisting with routine medical tasks, administering first aid, managing health records and supporting the school’s overall health program.
Key Responsibilities:
Student Care:- Assist in the care of students who are ill or injured during school hours.
- Administer first aid and emergency care in accordance with established protocols.
- Assist in the administration of medications to students under the supervision of the school nurse.
- Health Screenings:
- Assist with routine health screenings (e.g., vision, hearing, scoliosis) as directed by the school nurse.
- Document and report results to the appropriate parties.
- Health Record Management:
- Maintain and update student health records, including immunization records, medication logs, and incident reports.
- Ensure confidentiality and compliance with school policies and state regulations regarding student health information.
- Medication Administration:
- Assist in administering prescribed medications to students as authorized by the school nurse and in accordance with parental and physician instructions.
- Monitor students for any adverse reactions and report concerns to the school nurse.
- Communication:
- Communicate effectively with parents, teachers, and school administrators regarding student health concerns.
- Provide information and updates on students’ health status and any medical treatments administered during school hours.
- Support for School Nurse:
- Assist the school nurse with health education initiatives and wellness programs.
- Help organize and maintain the school clinic, ensuring that medical supplies are stocked and equipment is in good working order.
- Provide clerical support, such as filing, data entry and managing appointments for students needing medical attention.
- Health Education:
- Support the school nurse in providing health education to students, staff and parents.
- Assist in organizing and conducting health-related workshops and seminars.
- Infection Control:
- Help implement infection control measures within the school environment.
- Educate students on hygiene practices and illness prevention.
- Emergency Preparedness:
- Participate in emergency drills and assist in the development of emergency care plans.
- Be prepared to respond to medical emergencies and provide assistance as part of the school’s emergency response team.
Qualifications:
- Education: High school diploma or equivalent required. Completion of a medical assistant program or relevant certification (e.g., Certified Medical Assistant, Registered Medical Assistant) preferred.
- Experience: Previous experience in a healthcare setting, particularly with children, is desirable.
- Skills:
- Strong organizational and time-management skills.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to handle sensitive information with confidentiality.
- Basic knowledge of first aid and CPR (certification required).
- Proficiency in using electronic health records (EHR) systems.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to stand and walk for extended periods.
- Ability to lift and move supplies or equipment as needed (up to 25 pounds).
- Ability to respond quickly in emergencies.
Work Environment:
- The position is based in a school setting with occasional exposure to infectious diseases.
- The role may require flexibility to respond to emergencies or to provide care outside of normal school hours.
