Job Summary: To assist the Pharmacist in the completion of the hospital's medication management process. Pharmacy Technician shall comply with all applicable hospital policies, procedures, and standards for the provision of medication in the hospital's medication management process. Technician shall work under the direct supervision of a registered pharmacist.

Job Qualifications:

  • Education: High school graduate or equivalent. Graduate of Pharmacy Technician program (certificate program) preferred.
  • Personal Job-Related Skills: Ability to assist the pharmacist in provision of medication for the medication management process. Effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Licensure, Registry or Certification: Certified Pharmacy technician certified by PTCB and licensed by the Texas State Board of Pharmacy, preferred.
  • Experience:
    1. Prior work experience: One year experience as a Certified Pharmacy Technician preferred.
    2. Technical Training: Current BLS certification required. IV Certification as required by TSBP. CPI required.
  • Physical and Mental Requirements: Duties of the position require extended periods of standing and walking. Occasional bending, stooping, twisting, reaching, pulling, pushing, and lifting up to 40 pounds.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Maintains controlled substance records as required by law and maintains perpetual inventory of controlled substances on the nursing units.
  • Assists in stock control (stocking, ordering, monitoring usage). Returns out-dated medication to manufacturer and maintains record of return. Maintains stock in the Accudose Cabinets. Performs monthly inspections of drug storage to monitor for out-dated, mislabeled, or unusable medication.
  • Pre-packages medication under the supervision of the pharmacist. Performs IV admixtures via aseptic technique under direct supervision of the pharmacist.
  • Participates in pharmacy orientation programs, pharmacy staff meetings, and in other programs, committees, meetings, and functions as required by the hospital or the pharmacy. Participates in Quality Assurance / Performance Improvement assurance activities as required
  • Assists the pharmacist in filling employee prescriptions for hospital employees. Assists the pharmacist in processing patient charges and credits. Maintains logs, statistics, and other required documents.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

  • Completes position responsibilities by following established guidelines and protocols within the appropriate time frame.
  • Maintains confidentiality while working with confidential matters on a daily basis.
  • Demonstrates good skills in all forms of communication. Works effectively with colleagues in accomplishing goals and objectives of the department and organization. Provides service direct to patients while maintaining a positive patient relationship and a supportive atmosphere.
  • Maintains ACPE education requirements for position and completes educational requirements as required by the hospital.
  • Follows aseptic technique and established procedures for performing admixtures and using precautions when involved in handling potentially infectious materials.
  • Adheres to established hospital and department guidelines and protocols. Supports hospital mission, vision, and values.
  • Performs job specific functions at an acceptable level.
  • Provides excellent customer service to all customers of the pharmacy.
  • Responds to emergency situations as needed.
  • Reports to work on time, maintains professionalism at all times, and performs duties with minimal supervision.
