Job summary
Route Salesman’s job consists of driving, selling and physical delivery of meat products packed in cases ranging in weight from 6 lbs. to 50 lbs. to grocery stores and restaurants in an approximate 50 mile radius of the territories base of operations. Route Salesman off-loads product at customer location and if required stocks the shelf and rotates product. The route salesman prepares sales invoice by means of hand-held computer. The job also requires the transferring of product from a transfer truck to the route salesman’s truck. In addition, the route salesman is responsible for maintaining the truck in a safe condition per DOT regulations including pre-trip inspections, and having the truck repaired and serviced by a third party shop.
Summary of essential job functions
- Operate hand held computer.
- Sales and interpersonal skills sufficient to meet sales goals.
- Negotiated special sales and promotions with customers.
- Collection of accounts receivable from customers.
- Communicate customer requirements and expectations with regard to product safety and quality to the company.
- Prepare in-store displays at customer locations.
- Complete daily pre-trip inspections.
- Complete daily logs as required by DOT regulation.
- Communicate with operators from other shifts.
- Maintain and secure work tools.
- Clean and maintain truck and refrigerated bed.
- Load and unload product from truck.
- Other duties as assigned.
Additional Responsibilities
- Provide on-the-job training to new employees.
Knowledge and Skill Requirements
- Basic reading, writing, and arithmetic skills required. This is normally acquired through a high school diploma or equivalent.
- Must have a Class B Commercial Driver’s License with Air Brake Endorsement.
- Must possess a valid DOT medical card.
- Manual dexterity required for operating machinery and computers.
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds required.
Working Conditions
Working conditions involve working outside in all types of weather conditions as well as inside customer locations. Work may involve lifting of materials and product up to 50 pounds. Working in this environment requires the use of safety equipment to include but not limited to; steel-toed work boots.
