Eskenazi Health serves as the public hospital division of the Health & Hospital Corporation of Marion County. Physicians provide a comprehensive range of primary and specialty care services at the 327-bed hospital and outpatient facilities both on and off of the Eskenazi Health downtown campus as well as at 10 Eskenazi Health Center sites located throughout Indianapolis.

Job Role Summary

The Trauma Program Director is responsible for quality of care, resource utilization, and organizational management of the trauma program, which is Indiana's longest serving Level 1 Trauma program. Providing leadership of trauma patients care initiatives, staff development, physician relationships, quality initiatives, trauma data initiatives, trauma performance improvement processes and trauma program development. This position is responsible for ensuring the practice is in accordance with the American College of Surgeons (ACS), hospital, departmental, and unit policies to maintain Adult Trauma Level 1 status. This position communicates and facilitates communication throughout the organization regarding trauma patient care.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

  • Proactively contributes to Eskenazi Health’s mission: Advocate, Care, Teach, and Serve with special emphasis on the vulnerable population of Marion County; models Eskenazi Health PRIDE values.
  • Serves as the nurse leader to the Trauma/Acute Care service line.
  • Facilitate and lead, with the Chief of Trauma Services, the process to maintain American College of Surgeons regulations to be a verified Level 1 Trauma Center.
  • Provides business direction and input to clinical care and maps practice patterns and protocols as it relates to Trauma/Acute Care service line.
  • Participates in aspects of strategic planning and management of the Trauma Program and communicates about patient care activities as it relates to the injured or acutely ill patient.
  • Provides data for quality, cost efficiency, and mission effectiveness.
  • Develops, establishes, implements, maintains, and evaluates Trauma/Acute Care service-line based standards/guidelines/procedures/protocols.
  • Ensures Trauma/Acute Care service line practice is legal and in accordance with hospital, departmental, and unit policies, nurse practice act job descriptions and regulatory agencies
  • Assumes accountability for the trauma performance improvement program and monitors patient outcomes and audit filters as outlined in the yearly Performance Improvement plan. Analyzes data for trends and performance improvement opportunities each month.
  • Have oversight of the trauma registry. Ensures data is submitted in accordance with ACS & State Department of Health standards. 
  • Understands and supports work redesign and the organizations strategic goals.
  • Alters activities/behaviors to reflect/ensure adequate care appropriate to the age of the patients served (i.e. adolescent, geriatric, pediatric, neonatal, and adult) as described in the area/unit age specific and/or job specific competencies
  • Maintains age and job specific competencies and can provide direct patient care for trauma patients as well as serves as a mentor and teacher at the bedside as appropriate
  • Collaborates with trauma service liaisons for Orthopedics, Emergency Medicine, Neurosurgery, and subspecialties regarding optimal patient outcomes in accordance with ACS guidelines.
  • Provides consultation and oversight services for hospital and trauma staff regarding care of the trauma patient. Facilitates provider interaction with staff and patients. Identifies and addresses area-specific patient care issues and system problems.
  • Collaborates with staff to develop solutions to identified problems.
  • Interacts with Emergency Medical Services (EMS) agencies regarding pre-hospital care of the trauma patient
  • Serves as a resource for Indiana State Designation Subcommittee and Trauma Care Commission for Trauma System Development.
  • Oversees and provides guidance for the Injury Prevention Program and trauma outreach programs.
  • Demonstrates excellent communication skills with staff physicians, surgical residents, nursing staff, ancillary staff, and administration regarding optimal care of the trauma patient. Advocate for the trauma patients with all disciplines involved in patient care.

Job Requirements

  • Current Indiana license as a Registered Nurse
  • RN degree from a nationally accredited college or university.
  • Five (5) or more years of current clinical practice in Emergency or Critical Care nursing.
  • CEN, CCRN, or TCRN within two (2) years of accepting position.
  • TNCC, ENPC, ACLS/ALS, BLS/CPR certified; Instructor status preferred
  • Master’s degree in nursing or related field. BSN required. In lieu of a master’s degree, must have 5 or more years of nursing leadership experience
  • ACS- Optimal & TOPIC courses completed within 18 months of hire

• Knowledge of current medical practice, nursing theory, disease management, legal aspects pertaining to nursing care area

• Demonstrates necessary computer skills for area
• Possess knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of patients served.
• Demonstrates knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span possess the ability to assess data/interpret appropriate information needed to identify each patient’s requirements relative to age-specific needs.
• Uses age-appropriate communication and cognitive skills detailed in the department/area/unit job-specific/age-specific competencies.
• Functions as a member/leader of health care team, delegate responsibilities/duties utilizing clinical judgment
• Demonstrates the ability to work with frequent interruptions on issues involving physician and other health care providers.
• Demonstrates the ability to function effectively under stress, problem solving, and decision making with diverse responsibility.
• Demonstrates the ability to be self-directed with flexible hours.
