Senior Respiratory Therapist
Summary:
The Senior Respiratory Therapist provides age-appropriate respiratory care, operates, and maintains respiratory therapy equipment, performs diagnostic procedures, and administers treatments to patients in accordance with established clinical procedures, safety precautions, infection control practices, and regulatory requirements.
Responsibilities:
- Administers age-appropriate respiratory care in accordance with established procedures, safety precautions, and regulatory requirements. This includes providing oxygen therapy for neonates, using croup tents for infants, and administering aerosol prescriptions as needed.
- Conducts routine equipment rounds to ensure the proper working order and operation of specialized equipment, including ventilators, nebulizers, and other devices.
- Replaces, cleans, and stores department equipment as needed to maintain a safe and effective work environment.
- Responds promptly to emergency codes, Rapid Response, and pages for cardiopulmonary assistance, utilizing critical thinking and technical skills to provide timely interventions.
- Performs diagnostic procedures according to standard orders and physician's requests, utilizing various techniques such as arterial blood gas analysis, pulse oximetry, and spirometry.
- Accurately annotates patient medical records and completes required department paperwork in accordance with established procedures and regulatory requirements.
- Reviews and monitors therapy and treatment administered to patients to ensure adherence to physician's instructions, utilizing data-driven decision-making to optimize patient outcomes.
- Consults with physicians, nurses, and other hospital staff on respiratory cases requiring therapy, collaborating to develop comprehensive care plans and improve patient outcomes.
- Maintains an adequate supply of oxygen and other gases, ensuring seamless delivery of respiratory care services.
- Participates in the instruction of students, nurses, and other hospital staff in therapeutic techniques, sharing expertise to enhance knowledge and skills.
- Attends in-service and continuing education programs to stay current with the latest developments in respiratory care, enhancing professional growth and development.
- Participates in performance improvement activities, contributing to quality initiatives and process improvements that enhance patient care and operational efficiency.
Qualifications/Requirements:
Experience:
1-3 years' experience as a Registered Respiratory Therapist in a hospital setting is required.
Education:
Completion of an accredited two-year Respiratory Therapy program is required.
Licenses / Certifications:
A current NYS Respiratory Therapist License and Current BLS certification are required.
