The Human Resources & Environmental Health Safety Specialist will be responsible for providing HR and Safety support across a multitude of departmental functions. This role will require a hands-on approach to address HR and Safety issues, emphasizing an HR Business Partner support model, and workers’ compensation and OSHA safety engagement that includes accurately interpreting, communicating and applying specialized knowledge in human resources and safety. Key deliverables are providing reporting and guidance to management and contributing to the overall success of the HR and Safety departments.
Responsibilities
What the you will be doing...
- Provide HR and Safety onboarding and training, create an inclusive, compliant, safe, and employee-focused culture, based on XGS core business values and objectives.
- Serves as the initial contact and liaison or intake and assessment of employee injuries.
- Investigates workplace injuries and near misses to determine root cause and corrective actions. Maintains appropriate records.
- Assists with risk assessments and inspections of workplace facilities, equipment, and procedures.
- Assist in the development and continue to maintain emergency response plans and procedures to effectively respond to workplace emergencies.
- Conducts regularly scheduled evacuation and emergency preparedness drills.
- Support XGS Colleagues & Leaders in all HR matters throughout the employee life cycle.
- Processes FMLA and disability claims.
- Address employee inquiries, concerns, and issues in a timely and professional manner.
- Administer HR and Safety policies, procedures, and programs ensuring appropriate compliance.
- Provide coaching and guidance to managers on performance-related issues.
- Serve as a designated Federal Safety Program Administrator for OSHA 300 (Logs / Training / Reporting) and other applicable FMCSA and applicable state regulations.
- Maintain driver certification lists and monitor expiration dates.
- Manage DOT and FMCSA files needed to stay in compliance (MVR’s, Drug Screens, Registrations, Driver List, Medical Card submission, etc).
- Advise groups within XGS in the development & implementation of programs that must adhere to FMCSA or OSHA Compliance Regulations.
- Effectively analyze employee data and deploy actions determined through collaborative review
- Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local employment laws and regulations.
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
PREREQUISITE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND EDUCATION:
- Bachelor’s degree in a related discipline or equivalent combination of education and training that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential functions of the job, and a minimum of 6 years job specific work experience within the functional area
- Minimum of 5-7 years of HR / Safety or Combined experience, with a strong background in HR, Workers’ Compensation and OSHA processes.
- Strong employee relations skills: transportation or manufacturing experience preferred
- Proficiency in HRIS and Microsoft Office Suite.
- Strong understanding of employment laws and regulations.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive HR matters with discretion.
- 10% travel to other XGS facilities
- SHRM, HRCI , or professional safety certification preferred
- Knowledge of compensation administration, benefits, safety regulations and labor laws
- Knowledge and understanding of DOT Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations and CSA Regulations preferred
- Knowledge of common drug and alcohol testing, and DOT transportation requirements preferred
- Computer Proficiency with Microsoft Office Products (i.e.: Word, Excel, and email software etc.)

ENVIRONMENT
Most work is conducted in a comfortable office environment but exposure to site conditions may also occur. Personal protective equipment must be worn in all areas as required. Although the work usually is not considered inherently dangerous, must be careful while performing onsite services.
