Job Title: Youth Dance Instructor

POSITION SUMMARY:
This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit, charitable organization committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. Under the direction of the Executive Director or Program Coordinator in accordance with the policies of the YMCA of the Northwoods, the Dance Instructor will be responsible for building relationships with youth and families while also implementing dance lesson plans and curriculum and providing supervision to the dance participants.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Instruct and provide accurate demonstration of dance skills and routines to all dance participants. Interact and assist dancers with their skills/routines by actively correcting form and technique.
- Follow proper progressions and curriculum when teaching skills and routines. Recognize individual differences and adjust teaching strategies as needed for the success of all dancers.
- Understand the desire to continually experience growth in program enrollment and number of programs offered each session. Ensure that required skills are met before advancing participants to the next skill level.
- Provide a welcoming learning environment; make a special effort to greet new program participants and encourage positive relationship building in and among class participation. All classes should start/end on time.
- Assure that the first class orientation educates all participants/parents as to the goals and objectives as well as the skills to be taught in the program. Program evaluations should be completed by participants/parents during the end of the session, summarized and presented to supervisor for consideration.
- Be readily available during the first and last weeks of a program session, attending the class sessions for program areas of concern. Instruct at least one class per session.
- Determine the extent of safety concerns when identified and decide on appropriate action.

QUALIFICATIONS:
1. At least 16 years of age, with the ability to cultivate positive relationships among youth and their families.
2. Demonstrated high level of initiative, professionalism, positive attitude, and enjoy working in and creating a strong team environment.
3. Proven ability to be an engaging presence in leading programs and staff that will help to develop strong character-building skills in youth and teens.
4. Knowledge of and demonstrated proficiency in the instruction of the skills to be taught; requires at least one year of dance and/or related experience in basic tap, jazz, ballet, progressions for teaching dance, and development of basic curriculum.
5. Effectiveness in working with people including communication, motivation, discipline and cooperation.
6. Obtain First Aid, CPR/AED (CPR-Basic) Certificate within 90 days of hire; keep current.
