Position Title: Custodial Animal Care Technician 


This position primarily focuses on custodial duties, comprising 75–90% of the work week, with 10–25% allocated to animal care tasks based on staffing needs. The ideal candidate enjoys working both indoors and outdoors, is skilled in basic maintenance, and takes pride in cleaning and upkeep. A passion for lawn and garden care, along with a willingness to assist with occasional animal care, is essential. Flexibility and enthusiasm for driving to support animal and donation pickups are also critical.

 

Position Overview:

 

The Custodial Animal Care Technician (CACT) plays a critical role in caring for the facilities and the animals at the York County SPCA. The CACT is the primary employee responsible for the cleaning, sanitizing, organizing, and stocking of the general use spaces in the shelter. The CACT also provides transportation services for animals, performs donation and supply pickups, and stocks and organizes supplies. The CACT also assists in interior and exterior building maintenance such as snow removal, and lawn and garden upkeep. In addition to the custodial duties, the CACT is trained to provide general care for shelter animals including feeding, cleaning, walking, handling, and medicating shelter animals. 


 

Duties and Responsibilities:

 

Custodial Duties:

  • Conducts morning trash removal in the general use areas of the shelter (conference rooms, public & employee bathrooms, employee kitchen, administrative area).
  • Cleaning of, and restocking of, the general use areas of the shelter. This includes cleaning and disinfecting the employee kitchen and appliances, toilets, replenishing toilet paper, soap and paper towels.
  • Sweeping and moping the floors in the general use areas of the shelter.
  • Weekly donation pickups from companies such as Amazon, Target, and LifePath.
  • Putting away donations and organizing the food and supplies in the storage room.
  • Weekly trash removal, kitchen and bathroom cleaning and restocking in our satellite office.
  • Cat Trap cleaning, maintenance, and inventory, ensuring that cat traps are sanitized and brought back inside at the end of each day.
  • Consumables inventory and procurement from Weis, Giant, Tractor Supply, and other vendors.
  • Driving and fueling the York County SPCA vans.
  • Assisting the Facilities Technician with general lawn and garden maintenance.  Assistance to include push mowing, trash pickup, weeding, and watering of the York County SPCA property and walking paths.
  • Sidewalk and parking lot maintenance during snow to include the snow blowing or shoveling of sidewalks and steps, as well as ice-melt application.
  • May assist the Facilities Technician with projects when requested.
  • May assist the High Volume Spay Neuter Clinic with end of day cage cleaning and facility cleaning when requested.
  • May assist with morning traffic coordination when needed.
  • Additional custodial and maintenance duties as needed.

 

Animal Care Duties:

  • Daily animal transports from local animal emergency hospitals back to the shelter.
  • Performs basic animal husbandry tasks such as cage cleaning, feeding, walking, and other animal care activities for shelter cats, dogs, small animals, and exotic animals.
  • Performs medication administration.
  • Observes and reports medical and behavioral issues to the ACT Manager.
  • Moves animals as assigned.
  • Cleans and restocks assigned animal rooms in the shelter.

 

Education and Experience:


Required:

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED) required.
  • Ability to observe safety and security procedures and to comply with policies.
  • Ability to read and interpret written information; ability to write clear statements; ability to communicate orally.
  • A current Driver’s License, auto insurance, and clean driving record.


Preferred:

  • 1-2 Years of experience handling animals.
  • A minimum of 1 year of janitorial or custodial experience.
  • A minimum or 1 year of lawn care maintenance
  • Bilingual – English and Spanish.
  • Experience with OSHA and Personal Protective Equipment

  • Must be able to drive a company van. 
  • Must be able to safely and independently handle and load animals into and out of a company van. 



Physical Requirements:


  • Must be able to stand, walk, sit, talk and hear, stoop, bend, squat, kneel, grasp, grip, put fingers together firmly and reach above and below shoulder level and lift, push or pull 40 pounds for situations of moving and lifting materials or supplies, repetitively use hands to operate computers; flex the neck upward and downward; twist the neck and the waist. Ability to work both inside and outside of the shelter. 
  • Must be able to drive and sit in the York County SPCA vans, independently pick up animals and animal cages to put them into the vans, and remove the animals and animal cages from the vans.  
  • Must be able to safely operate a push mower, snow blower, and use snow shovels to clear the York County SPCA sidewalks during inclement weather. 
  • Must be able to independently load and unload donations and supplies from the York County SPCA vans.

Salary and Benefits


  • $16 - $17 per hour, paid biweekly, direct deposit available
  • York County SPCA employee health care costs are thirty dollars ($30.00) per pay period. Vision and dental benefits are included.
  • The York County SPCA offers retirement benefits with a dollar-for-dollar match up to a maximum of three percent (3%) of your salary per year. The organization offers a SIMPLE IRA, company paid life and short-term disability insurance.
  • 200 hours of Paid Time Off (25 eight-hour days) plus six holidays and two floating holidays.



Working Conditions and Expectation:


  • 40-hour workweek Tuesday through Saturday 8am - 4:30pm.
  • Some occasional evening and holiday shifts may be required.
  • Comfortable with regular exposure to animal odors, diseases, possible contagious conditions, bites, scratches, animal waste, and moderate noise levels.
  • Comfortable with exposure to cleaning and sanitization products. 
  • Comfortable working both inside and outside of the shelter.
    • Comfortable operating lawn equipment, snow removal equipment, and the company vans.
