Traffic Control field technicians are responsible for setting up, maintaining, and removing temporary traffic control devices like cones, signs, and barricades at construction sites or special events, ensuring the safe flow of vehicular and pedestrian traffic by directing traffic with hand signals when necessary, all while adhering to local and state traffic control regulations and plans; essentially acting as a safety coordinator within a work zone to protect both workers and the public.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Daily duties will include but are not limited to the following:
- Traffic control setup. Installing and positioning traffic control devices like cones, signs, barricades, and flaggers according to project plans and safety guidelines.
- Traffic direction. Manually directing traffic using hand signals and a stop/slow paddle, particularly at lane closures or detours.
- Work zone monitoring. Observing traffic flow within the work zone and adjusting traffic control devices as needed to maintain safety.
- Communication. Maintaining clear communication with construction crews, law enforcement, and other personnel on site.
- Safety compliance. Enforcing safety protocols within the work zone and reporting any potential hazards.
- Equipment maintenance. Inspecting and maintaining traffic control devices, ensuring they are in proper working order.
- Documentation. Keeping records of traffic control placements and any incidents that occur within the work zone.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Strong attention to detail: Precise placement of traffic control devices is critical for safety.
- Ability to stand for extended periods and direct traffic with hand signals.
- Ability to communicate in a clear and concise manner with drivers and construction crews.
- Traffic control knowledge: Understanding and applying local and state traffic control regulations and standards.
- Problem-solving abilities: Adapting traffic control measures based on changing conditions on site.
Education, Training and Experience
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- 1 year experience in traffic control, handling plans and regulations.
- Work Zone Safety Procedures Training.
Physical Requirements & Working Conditions
- Performs strenuous physical activity, for long periods, under varying and adverse field conditions.
- Must be able to lift and/or carry up to 75 lbs., stand, walk on uneven surfaces, manually manipulate, grasp, reach out and above shoulder, climb, kneel, bend, twist, and push/pull.
- Vision: Frequent near acuity, depth perception, and color vision.
- Work is performed outside in all types of environmental conditions, with temperatures ranging from mild/moderate to extreme cold/heat. Exposure to heavy traffic, noise levels ranging from moderate to loud for occasional to frequent time periods.
Additional Qualifying Factors
As a condition of employment, you will be required to pass a pre-employment drug screening and physical screening. If applicable to the contract, you may also be required to submit through a background check. You must have reliable transportation to/from work and must have a valid driver's license at time of application.
