Graphic Designer (Parental Leave Cover)

The International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES) is an intergovernmental organization which aims to advance the scientific understanding of marine ecosystems and provide information and advice on the sustainable use of the seas.

ICES is currently in search of a Graphic Designer to join our Secretariat located in Copenhagen, Denmark. This is a fixed-term parental leave cover position for 12 months (June 2025-May 2026).

This is a role with diverse tasks and requires working with highly skilled professionals both from the Secretariat and wider ICES community to advance and promote scientific research on marine ecosystems and sustainable use of the oceans. We offer a job where you get to work closely with leading scientists and get insight into the operations of an intergovernmental organization.

You will join the Secretariat, which is made up of approximately 80 staff who represent over 30 different nationalities. As a Communications and Publications team member, you will encounter working days with lots of variation, requiring plenty of quick thinking and problem solving.

Main Responsibilities

We seek a service-minded colleague to:

• Design and layout printed and digital materials for science outreach, such as brochures, infographics, reports, and posters.
• Develop and create engaging digital content for our activities, products, and events, including social media posts, carousels, and illustrations.
• Ensure that the visual identity of ICES is cohesive across all communications channels, including publications, ensuring alignment with brand guidelines.
• Develop the visual identity for ICES Annual Science Conference 2026 in collaboration with the host country.
• Assist with print production by providing guidance on in-house printing and coordinating with external vendors.
• Provide design support for internal requests as needed.

Qualifications and Experience

Our friendly and outgoing team see the ideal candidate as a highly organized person who can work well under tight deadlines. Further requirements for this position include:

• Accredited qualification in graphic design, visual communication, or relevant discipline.
• Proven professional experience in designing print and digital products and quality management in publishing.
• Experience in creating content for digital platforms, including social media campaigns. Experience in animation and video editing is an asset.
• Solid knowledge of and experience with Adobe Creative Suite (especially Adobe InDesign, Illustrator, and Photoshop) and Microsoft Office. Experience with Adobe After Effects is an asset.
• Excellent English language skills (speaking, reading, writing).
• Comfortable working in an international and multicultural environment.

Terms of Appointment

The appointment will be full-time (38 hours per week), for a 12-month contract period starting in June 2025.

This role is graded as C3, step 1 which equates to a gross monthly salary of DKK 30,287.78 (net monthly salary 20,870.16 after employee pension contribution) in year 2025. A tax-free pension scheme is also available, to which both the employee and ICES contribute (7.9% and 15.8% of salary, respectively).

ICES Staff Rules set out the conditions and principles of employment and the responsibilities of the Secretariat staff. ICES Secretariat staff enjoy privileges and immunities pursuant to the Host Agreement between the Government of Denmark and ICES. The salaries of ICES staff are exempt from Danish income tax and are based on, but not identical to, the United Nations common salary system.
