Engineering Manager II: PaaS Platform

About the Role

The Platform Engineering organization at Uber ensures seamless operation of all Uber products, powering thousands of microservices that run business-critical functions like trips and food orders. These services rely on datastores, configurations, ML models, real-time and streaming data, and network routing, all running across millions of containers, on hundreds of thousands of hosts, and many more - both on-prem and in the cloud. The Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) Platform team at Uber organizes and exposes platform resources and tools via our internal cloud platform, driving developer velocity and productivity with a frictionless, integrated development experience for Uber engineers.

Our mission is to unify the tools and resources used by engineers to build Uber, into a seamless, and managed platform. By leveraging a unified infrastructure model, declarative APIs, and a consistent user experience, we empower Uber engineers to focus on delivering world-class features and products at scale. We are transforming Uber's internal platforms into a cohesive PaaS that simplifies resource management, integrates workflows, and ensures safety and reliability in engineering operations. Our work spans Uber's global infrastructure, bridging data centers and cloud providers like AWS and GCP.

What you'll do

As the Engineering Manager for PaaS, you will lead a talented team of engineers and collaborate closely with platform users across Uber. Your responsibilities will include:

• Define the strategy and vision for PaaS, ensuring alignment with organizational goals.
• Build and lead a high-performing team, hiring, mentoring, and fostering a culture of collaboration and innovation.
• Deliver on the mission of creating a unified, declarative, and goal-state-driven platform by driving product development and implementation.
• Partner with cross-functional teams, including product, design, and other engineering groups, to deliver seamless platform integrations.
• Establish and track KPIs to measure platform effectiveness and user satisfaction.
• Advocate for platform reliability, cost efficiency, and self-service operations to enhance user experience and scale.

Basic Qualifications

• A background in software engineering with hands-on experience in distributed systems, infrastructure, or platform development.
• 3 years of experience managing engineering teams, with a proven track record of delivering on technical projects.
• Proficiency in setting team goals, managing performance, and coaching engineers to achieve excellence.
• Strong interpersonal and collaboration skills, with a user-first mindset to understand and prioritize developer needs.

Preferred Qualifications

• Expertise in Kubernetes (K8s) and its ecosystem, including the api server and related components.
• Experience in building developer platforms or tools at scale in diverse environments.
• Familiarity with declarative APIs and concepts such as goal-state-driven architecture.
• Ability to align engineering roadmaps with company-wide objectives and ensure incremental value delivery.
