PhytoX is a young Berlin-based biotech company aim to revolutionize the aquaculture health management sector. We’re building next-generation solutions at the intersection of synthetic biology and marine innovation, starting with microalgal genetic engineering.

ABOUT THE ROLE

We’re looking for a Lead Scientist who’s ready to roll up their sleeves and spearhead lab operations and drive innovation in microalgal genetic engineering. If you’re passionate about synthetic biology, hands-on experimentation, and building something transformative from the ground up—this is your moment.

What You’ll Do:

• Design, plan, and execute genetic engineering experiments in microalgae (cloning,

transformation, strain construction)

• Lead synthetic biology research projects to optimize expression of proteins

• Develop, implement, and manage lab protocols, timelines, and workflows

• Oversee day-to-day lab operations, ensuring efficiency, safety, and quality

• Manage, mentor, and grow a small team of researchers and lab staff

• Collaborate closely with founders to shape R&D strategy and goals

• Maintain accurate records and communicate results clearly and effectively

WHAT YOU BRING

• PhD in Synthetic Biology, Molecular Biology, Biotechnology, or related field

• Postdoc and/or industry experience (min 2 years)

• Extensive hands-on experience with microalgal genetic engineering

• Strong molecular biology and cloning skills

• Proven ability to turn project object¯ives into testing strategies

• Exceptional organizational and time-management skills

• Ability to effectively work as part of a team with internal and external members

• Experience managing people and projects in a lab setting

• A startup mindset: proactive, adaptable, and excited to build from scratch
