W2-Carl Zeiss Endowed Professorship "Multimodal AI Data Analysis Methods in the Life Sciences" (m/f/d)

POSTED ON 4/24/2025 AVAILABLE BEFORE 5/17/2025
Hochschule Kaiserslautern Zweibrücken, Rhineland-Palatinate Full Time
Kennziffer: IMST 2025/13

Your Profile

This professorship will be funded by the Carl Zeiss Foundation with attractive research opportunities (semester teaching load reduced by 7 SWS until 31.12.2030).

We are looking for a highly motivated individual for the newly established Carl Zeiss Endowed Professorship "Multimodal AI Data Analysis Methods in the Life Sciences" (m/f/d).

Today, modern high-throughput methods that allow the parallel acquisition of many biomedical measurement data, can be used to better detect pathological changes. A combined evaluation of such data sets, which are collected using different methods with variable temporal and spatial resolution, can provide considerable value for the diagnosis and treatment of diseases. For the long-term strategic expansion of the existing expertise in this central research area at Kaiserslautern University of Applied Sciences, we are looking for a person who uses or develops modern AI methods to analyze multimodal data sets that can be used for the development of new treatment or prophylaxis strategies. The person should have a proven track record in research and teaching in at least two of the following topics:

  • AI-supported analyses in several of the following disciplines: genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, biosignals
  • Development of AI-supported processes, for example for single-cell data analyses
  • Explainable AI for analyses and predictions
  • Prediction models, for example for genetic interaction analyses, metabolic pathways or the identification of biomarkers

We expect:

  • A degree in the field of computer science or life sciences
  • Outstanding scientific expertise and a qualified doctorate
  • Experience in acquiring research funding
  • Didactic skills and commitment to teaching, also in English
  • Experience with interdisciplinary AI research collaborations in the biomedical field

Funding from the Carl Zeiss Foundation as part of a joint application by the IMST department and the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI) in Kaiserslautern makes it possible to reduce the standard teaching load from 18 SWS to 11 SWS for an initial period of 5 years. A permanent reduction of teaching activities to up to 9 SWS is possible by acquiring corresponding third-party funding. The professorship has access to the equipment of the DFKI in Kaiserslautern as well as the equipment of the University of Kaiserslautern.

The position is intended as a strategic bridge between Kaiserslautern University of Applied Sciences and the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI). Close personnel cooperation with the DFKI, and an active participation in the university's research activities are therefore a prerequisite. In this context, we are striving to increase third-party funding and the number of doctorates.

The subject areas are to be represented both in teaching and in applied research. We expect very good didactical skills as well as the willingness to participate in the exchange with our international partner universities and to offer courses in English. In addition, we expect committed participation in teaching basic subjects and possibly giving lectures in related subject areas.

We expect the applicant to integrate themselves well into the existing team both professionally and personally, to get involved in the academic self-administration of our university and to enjoy imparting knowledge from their own professional experience to the students.

The university has a large number of collaborations with universities and research institutions such as Max Planck Institutes and Fraunhofer Institutes as well as companies. Intensifying and expanding these collaborations is highly desired.

Active participation in the university’s research activities is desired. In this context, we strive to increase third-party funding and the number of cooperative doctorates.

We advocate a supervision concept that requires a high level of presence of the teaching staff at the university campus.

German language skills (at least level C1) and English language skills are required. Teaching language ist mainly German.

The hiring requirements for professors are regulated in Sec 49 of the Higher Education Act of the State of Rhineland-Palatinate.

We expressly welcome applications from all age groups and independent of gender identify, disability, ethnic background, religion, ideology, sexual orientation or identity.

If you have any content-related questions regarding this job announcement, please do not hesitate to contact Prof. Dr. rer. nat. Bernd Bufe (bernd.bufe@hs-kl.de).
