This position is for a Community Employment Scheme based in Galway City.
Eligibility to participate on CE is generally linked to those who are 21 years or over and in receipt of a qualifying social welfare payment for 1 year or more or 18 years and over for certain disadvantaged groups. Your eligibility will have to be verified by the Department.
This is a developmental opportunity, no experience necessary. Accredited training will be provided to support your career.
Role
The role of the Youth Work Assistant will be to support and assist the work of the Youth Worker and general administration duties in the Youth Project
Duties and Responsibilities
1. Supporting Young People
- Engage with young people and maintain a supportive and empowering relationship based on mutual respect and trust.
- Use a strengths-based approach to support young people.
- Adapt approaches and methodologies to the needs of young people at the intersection of age, gender, nationality, ethnicity, religion, abilities, geographical location (city / county, urban / rural) and socio-cultural interests.
2. Programme Development and Delivery
- In conjunction with the Youth Worker, plan the programmes and activities for the youth groups divided by age groups (10 -14 years old, 14-18 years old, 18-24 years old).
3. Teamwork
- Work as part of a team and to participate in meetings in an active and constructive manner and supporting the ethos of the organisation.
- Have a flexible approach to the work.
4. General duties
- Ensure that the protection and welfare of young people is a primary concern.
- Adhere to Youth Work Ireland Galway’s policies and procedures.
- Participate in supervision with the supervisor for individual support.
- Participate in fund raising and promotional activities.
- Agree to undertake other duties/responsibilities that are appropriate to the role.
- Maintenance and housekeeping of the Youth Centre.
- Administration Duties as necessary.
Skills and Competencies
- Competent level of IT skills (Outlook, Word, Excel)
- Effective written and verbal communication skills
- Effective planning and organisational skills
- Cultural awareness and ability to interact with people from different cultural backgrounds
- Ability to effectively plan and prioritise work load
- Interest in sport, arts & crafts and leisure activities.
You will be required to participate in training as part of the programme. You will get opportunities to engage in various areas of youth work e.g. Mental Health, and Community Development. Training will be both on the job and training course led, with opportunities to study from QQI level 3 up to and including HETAC 7. There are also a range of developmental opportunities in the areas of Work Experience, Social and Societal Matters and General Life Skills.
