Job Overview

Purpose & Scope:

Roto Artists are essential in isolating elements from live-action footage by drawing mattes around them, allowing for seamless integration of computer-generated (CG) elements into a live-action environment. we’re looking for an experienced Senior Roto Artist with 5 years of professional experience, including involvement in international film productions.

Responsibilities

  • Advanced Rotoscoping: Create and refine detailed roto mattes to isolate objects or elements from live-action footage, focusing on challenging shots such as hair, glass, and fine-edge work.
  • Sophisticated Shape Creation/Editing: Work on creating and animating shapes manually and with trackers, applying various fill modes and opacity settings to ensure smooth integration with composites.
  • Quality Assurance: Review and revise incoming roto work to ensure it meets the highest standards of quality, adhering to the project’s creative vision.
  • Creative Interpretation: Collaborate with teams to apply artistic concepts, creatively interpreting notes and direction, and constantly learning new techniques to enhance roto work.
  • Compositing Support: Partner with compositors to generate clean, precise roto mattes that contribute to the overall composite, ensuring seamless integration of elements.
  • Workflow Adherence: Follow the studio’s established VFX pipeline and file management protocols, ensuring that roto work is completed on time and to the correct specifications.
  • Client Interaction: Effectively communicate with clients or external teams, especially in an international context, to meet and exceed client expectations.
  • International Film Expertise: Bring your experience working on international film productions to maintain global standards of quality, collaborating with teams across different time zones and cultures.
  • Tracking Support: Assist in 2D and 3D tracking efforts, ensuring the accuracy and consistency of roto work, especially for dynamic shots.
  • Cross-Department Collaboration: Work closely with compositors, supervisors, and other departments to ensure that roto work aligns with larger VFX sequences and integrates seamlessly with the overall production.

Requirements

Experience:

  • 5 years as a Roto Artist in the VFX industry, with a significant portion of that experience working on international film projects.
  • Proven track record of working on high-profile VFX productions.

Skills:

  • Expertise in industry-standard roto and compositing software such as Nuke, Silhouette, After Effects, or similar tools.
  • Advanced knowledge of rotoscoping techniques, with a strong ability to handle challenging shots involving fine details, transparent objects, and moving elements.
  • Solid experience in 2D/3D tracking, paint work, and clean plate creation.
  • Ability to work in a collaborative, fast-paced environment and effectively manage multiple tasks to meet deadlines.

Education:

  • A degree in Fine Arts, Animation, VFX, or a related field (BFA/MFA), along with specialized certification or training in VFX.

Technical Requirements:

  • Good knowledge of VFX pipelines, industry-standard software, and VFX technicalities.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in International Film Projects: Understanding global production standards and experience with cross-cultural collaboration.
  • 3D Work: Familiarity with 3D integration and match-moving would be an advantage.
  • Client Interaction: Comfortable handling communication with international clients or external teams, ensuring deliverables align with their specifications.
