Job Summary:
The RN in the ED is responsible for assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating care for patients in the emergency department. This role requires critical thinking, a strong understanding of emergency medicine, and the ability to manage multiple patients simultaneously in a high-stress environment.
Key Responsibilities:
- Patient Assessment:
- Conduct thorough and timely assessments of patients upon arrival in the ED.
- Evaluate vital signs, medical history, and current symptoms to prioritize care (triage).
- Perform physical exams and review lab results and imaging.
- Emergency Care:
- Administer medications, treatments, and interventions as prescribed.
- Provide wound care, including suturing or dressing, and assist with procedures like intubation or central line placement.
- Stabilize patients in critical conditions (e.g., cardiac arrest, trauma, severe respiratory distress).
- Collaborative Care:
- Work closely with physicians, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, and other healthcare professionals in managing patient care.
- Assist with diagnostic tests, including lab work and imaging.
- Participate in code situations (e.g., Code Blue) and critical care emergencies.
- Patient Education:
- Educate patients and families on treatment plans, discharge instructions, and aftercare.
- Explain medication instructions, side effects, and when to seek further medical attention.
- Documentation:
- Maintain accurate and detailed records of patient care, assessments, treatments, and communications with the medical team.
- Use electronic health records (EHR) systems to document all patient information.
- Patient Advocacy:
- Advocate for patient rights, safety, and dignity during their ED visit.
- Provide emotional support to patients and families during difficult and stressful situations.
- Emergency Procedures:
- Assist in life-saving procedures, including CPR, intubation, and managing trauma cases.
- May participate in managing pediatric, geriatric, or psychiatric emergency cases depending on the facility.
- Infection Control and Safety:
- Follow strict infection control protocols to prevent hospital-acquired infections.
- Ensure patient safety by monitoring vital signs and adjusting care as needed.
- Maintain a clean and safe working environment.
Skills and Qualifications:
- Licensing: Active RN license (NY).
- Education: Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Nursing (ADN or BSN).
- Experience: Clinical experience in an ED or similar fast-paced, acute care setting is preferred.
- Certifications:
- Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certifications required.
- Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) may be required, depending on the facility.
- Trauma Nurse Core Course (TNCC) may be preferred.
