General Purpose of Job:

Working as part of an interdisciplinary team, performs radiographic examinations to create images needed for diagnosis.  Radiography integrates scientific knowledge and technical skills with effective patient interaction to provide quality patient care and useful diagnostic information.

The Lead Technologist integrates professional and ethical judgment and critical thinking in performing these examinations. They will also assign duties, supervises, instructs and assist with evaluating the clinical performance of personnel, under the indirect supervision of the Diagnostic X-Ray Coordinator.   They are expected to stay informed of ongoing developments and issues within the department and institution by actively participating in various departmental and hospital meetings and committees. The lead technologist also performs all duties of a Radiographer I and maintains clinical competency.

The Lead Technologist must demonstrate and have an understanding of human anatomy, physiology, pathology and medical terminology while maintaining a high degree of accuracy in radiographic positioning and exposure technique.  He or she must also maintain knowledge about radiation protection and safety.  The lead technologist is the primary liaison between patients, staff Radiographers, Radiologists and other members of the support team.

The Lead Technologist will perform other duties as deemed necessary.

• Performs all the duties of Radiographer I
• Assists with evaluation of overall job performance
• Assist with counseling staff in regard to performance, conduct attendance and other related matters
• Prepares diagnostic radiology work schedule
• Assists with evaluating work performance of Radiographers
• Assist to ensure that new Radiographers receive proper orientation and three month evaluation
• Supervises the technical aspects of radiographic procedures and maintains prescribed standards
• Assists in developing/maintaining technique charts
• Serves as a resource and support person for Radiographers
• Assists in resolving inter and inter departmental problems relating to diagnostic radiology
• Lends his/her expertise to staff radiographers when needed in performing highly difficult or complicated procedures
• Responsible for the weekly inventory of diagnostic area supplies, orders needed items via computer
• Responsible for weekly inventory of contrast media, ordering needed supply from Pharmacy
• Assists the assigned Radiographers in performing quarterly collimator checks, verification of inspections and protective apparel according to TRCR requirements
• Assists in performing departmental safety inspections
• Reports equipment malfunction to service vendors, ensuring all required documentation is completed
• Informs radiographers of changes in policies, procedures and changes that occur in the department
• Assists in updating/maintaining  departmental Policy and Procedure Manuals for optimal compliance with The Joint Commission
• Able to performs radiography if licensed with the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists as a radiographer (ARRT RT(R) and with the Texas Medical Board as a Certified Medical Radiologic Technologist (CMRT).
• Able to perform CT if licensed with the American Registry of Radiologic Technologist in CT (ARRT-CT)
• Performs other related duties as assigned

Education and/or Experience:

• Associate's degree (A. A.) or equivalent from two-year College or technical school in radiologic technology.
• 2-3 yr. pediatric radiography/CT experience in a hospital setting.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:

• Registered Computerized Technologist (CT) – American Registry of Radiologic Technologists in Computerized Technology (ARRT-CT) if performing CT
• Registered with the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists as a Registered Radiologic Technologist (RT-R) if performing radiography
• Current unlimited license with the Texas Medical Board as a Certified Medical Radiologic Technologist (CMRT) if performing radiography
• Current CPR Certification
