PURPOSE The Site Head and Head of Gateway Labs San Diego provides leadership and oversight to the site and associated portfolio companies. This role is part of the team linking Lilly to an entrepreneurial community in San Diego that fosters innovation and deep scientific / drug development exchange with local life science companies to make medicines that help people live longer, healthier, more active lives. Importantly, this role leverages Lilly expertise to build, grow, and accelerate opportunities into the portfolio. This individual will be accountable for the day-to-day management of the Lilly Gateway Labs (LGL) program at the San Diego site; examples of some activities include leadership of a portfolio of companies that reside at the site, deploying LGL program offerings, and link to engage leadership directly with targeted companies. He/she needs to be able to leverage a demonstrated and thorough understanding of drug development and emerging technologies to establish Lilly’s scientific presence in the San Diego Area and provide a sustainable flow of external innovation to the model’s portfolio. The individual will play a critical role in establishing and maintaining effective relationships with identified companies that have assets and platforms that are on strategy, and adjacent to the existing strategic focus of Lilly core therapeutic areas, as well as novel/disruptive assets and platforms. The role will work closely with the Lilly New Venture Sciences team for the west coast. The role will influence senior leadership, and/or external partners on business and technical decisions that have a critical impact on business direction. The individual will enable the flow of compounds through the drug development process via rigorous monitoring and ensuring strong and productive interactions between teams/companies, functions, governance bodies and senior management. The individual will drive positive exchange across the development value chain and ensure an innovative ecosystem at the site by removing bureaucratic barriers to execution and advancement. Importantly, the individual will represent the value the site can bring into complex business discussions and drive our commitment to flawless execution after site entry decisions have been taken. Finally, the individual will be responsible for assessing/planning and addressing issues related to “flow” of portfolio projects and providing guidance regarding portfolio decisions to senior management as well as to identified companies. To do so, the individual will maintain a strong link to LRL and portfolio management decision makers; the individual’s mature relationships with key Lilly leadership and stakeholders across the therapeutic area portfolio’s is a crucial component to the success of the individual and the accelerator. Functional and Technical Expertise: Recognized as a drug development expert and has an established network across the industry and particular in the San Diego biotech ecosystem. Applies rigor in the oversight and execution of external innovation and continually evaluates the opportunity to the portfolio (complementary, additive or synergistic). Actively respected as a resource of insights and information on current and future directions and trends. Applied knowledge of project and portfolio management (e.g. management of integration, scope, time, cost, quality, human resources, communications, regulatory). Extensive experience in driving project and portfolio advancement via clear and succinct communication to all levels within and external to the organization. Influence: Leads and influences innovative thinking / decision-making / integration for new targets / molecules / platforms / capabilities across all Lilly therapeutic areas / grey / white space. In order to present a unified face to potential external partners, the individual will possess a deep understanding of Lilly’s on-going efforts in San Diego and work to ensure alignment between them. Individual will play an integral role in fostering and maturing relationships with both internal and external partners (including biotechs, venture funds, and academic partners) thereby influencing senior leadership and innovative thinking across multiple functions, and geographies. Ensure integration of efforts through rigorous goal setting, effective teamwork, performance management, collaboration with Lilly groups, and a commitment to serving customers both inside and outside the Company. A key component involves forming and shaping new projects with companies and connecting them directly to Lilly’s internal drug discovery teams as well as securing leadership buy-in and funding to advance these to portfolio inflection points. Leadership: Responsible for maintaining a portfolio of companies that will be housed in the LGL San Diego site. These companies will provide a sustainable flow of innovative assets to the therapeutic area portfolios (50%) as well as white space opportunities (50%). Fosters a collaborative environment between Lilly Research Labs and those companies in the San Diego accelerator. Examples: 1) symposia from specific technical areas e.g. regulatory or business development 2) facilitates connecting companies internally with key technical areas. Focus on excellence in science and people, and a culture based on leadership and teamwork that creates a work climate and culture exemplifying Lilly values. Foster and maintain effective partnerships and knowledge transfers within Lilly. Coach and mentor team members, including performance management and career planning and development. Excellent oral and written communication skills; able to develop credibility in a network that spans components inside and outside of the company. Track record of handling sensitive confidential data (ideally in 2 and 3 way discussions with entrepreneurs and investors) is required. Excellent self-management and organizational skills; able to independently manage workload, set personal and team priorities and adjust as needed. Strong interpersonal and teambuilding skills; able to create a shared vision and productively manage conflict between team members and diverse interpersonal styles; able to deliver effective coaching and feedback. Well-grounded in business fundamentals with the ability to maintain a corporate view of the portfolio. Able to exercise sound judgment and take and defend tough positions. BASIC QUALIFICATIONS: Graduate degree (PhD, MD, MBA) with 8 years of experience in the pharmaceutical, biotech, or related industry. Ability to be onsite ideally 4 days/week. ADDITIONAL PREFERENCES Minimum of 8 years’ experience building relationships with scientific leadership and functional area leaders. Experience with search and evaluate and business development. Ability to make sound decisions on critical issues with minimum supervision. Demonstrated ability to think and work creatively; exhibiting sound judgment and risk management practices to effectively make decisions. Strong business acumen with an ability to apply internal and external business knowledge to execute the strategy. Proven ability to capture the support from and influence of senior leadership on a consistent basis. Highly developed project management and team facilitation skills. Ability to work across cultures—people, company and geographic. Significant mediation skills across both group and individual interactions. Legal acumen to understand contractual terms and proactively identify issues. Advanced analytical skills and the ability to communicate complex information and analyses to a variety of scientific and non-scientific audiences.
