Schedule: Full time - 36 hours/week or greater Shift: Variable Less than 12 hour shift (United States of America) Weekly Work Schedule: M-F with weekend Call Job Information Exemption Status: Exempt A Brief Overview The General Surgery and Trauma Advanced Practice Provider (APP) provides advanced patient care in the acute care setting, operating room, and clinic based on educational preparation and/or certification in the practitioner role to a specific patient population. Care goals include promotion of healing, and prevention of illness and recidivism. The APP assumes the management of patients, functioning in both an independent and collaborative role with the physician, case manager, and other members of the health care team. The APP performs select procedures, designs individualized treatment plans, evaluates outcomes, and modifies the treatment plan as needed in accordance with established management protocols and regulating bodies. The APP facilitates the transition of patients between service units and provides/coordinates complex patient and family teaching. The delivery of professional nursing care at Stormont-Vail Health is guided by Jean Watson's Theory of Human Caring and the theory of Shared governance, both of which are congruent with the mission, vision, and values of the organization. Education Qualifications Must be a graduate of an accredited PA/APRN program. Meets educational preparation or other qualifications within specified time frames as determined/outlined by specific department policy. Experience Qualifications Surgical first assist experience. Preferred Experience with general surgery or trauma patient population. Preferred Skills and Abilities All APRN incumbents are required to maintain Registered Nurse competencies as designated by Federal and State organizations and as outlined in SVH policy. (Required proficiency) Licenses and Certifications Registered Nurse - KSBN Must have valid APRN licensure. Be certified as a nurse practitioner by a recognized national certifying body that has established standards for nurse practitioners. Required or Physician Assistant (PA) - KSBHA Required Additional certification may be required in certain patient care settings or populations. The department director will provide specific information and the time frame in which such certification may be attained at the time of hire/transfer into department. What you will do Work closely with surgeons in providing patient care across the continuum (clinic, inpatient, operating room, emergency/trauma bay) by performing consultation, evaluation, and provisional management of the patient with general surgery needs or traumatic injuries. Design and evaluate individualized treatment plans, collaborate with the consulting/ancillary services, and coordinate care including admission, transfers, and discharges. Consult with members of the health care team for emergency problems to expedite resolution/disposition. Participate in hospital rounds, trauma service rounds, review and interpret laboratory/radiologic studies and vital signs. Analyze data to identify health/illness problems, the human responses to actual or potential health/illness problems, variations from the norm in diagnosis, emergent problems, and complications. Intervene as appropriate in collaboration with the general surgery and trauma service teams. Assist with surgical procedures in the operating room and other designated locations. Tasks include assisting in providing exposure by retraction or suctioning, handling tissue, providing hemostasis, suturing, and using instruments to include laparoscopic camera operation. Provide documentation of services provided in compliance with established medical records, medical staff, and billings procedures. This may include history and physical, consultation, progress notes, discharge summaries, or other necessary documentation. Exercise initiative, problem solving, decision making. Demonstrate a dedication to lifelong learning and personal growth in knowledge and medical skills. New graduate APRN incumbents will maintain bedside nursing skills for the first 24 months and may be designated to work at the bedside. Maintenance of skills work and assignment at bedside will be determined by leadership. Provide early identification of discharge needs, working with case management and social services, nursing care team, and ancillary services for coordination. Develop proficiency in performing thorough history and physical examinations including neurologic and orthopedic trauma examinations with interpretation of radiologic findings. Maintain prescriptive authority to include scheduled medications according to regulating bodies and SVHC protocols. Participate in trauma activations, manage medical emergencies in the inpatient units, provide telephone consultation to nursing or members of the health care team. Will take call (after hours, weekend, and holidays) on a scheduled basis, responsible to respond to department service needs during call shift. May assist with coordination of coverage and calendar maintenance. Perform expanded role in the clinic setting including follow-up care, suture and staple removal, wound care, and other therapies in accordance with management protocols. Ensure that care delivered to patients is provided according to the Stormont-Vail Health mission, strategic plans, and all internal/external regulations, policies, and procedures. Practice within the regulating bodies with within the guidelines of management protocols. Supports the established care models of Stormont-Vail Health. Assists in the development of research based clinical care protocols, guidelines, and pathways for trauma services patients. Facilitates changes in clinical practice based upon document research. Monitors and analyzes outcomes based on research driven practice change. Assists staff nurses in participating in research and incorporating the findings into their practice.
