Newport News, Virginia Overview Provides timely spiritual care to patients and members of their families in collaboration with hospital staff to understand and determine length, type and purpose to the situation, which may include occasional on call or weekend coverage. Provides appropriate intervention in emergency situations to patients, families, and staff; and refers to other spiritual care staff, community clergy and/or congregations when appropriate at the request of the patient. Engages to meet the spiritual, religious, and emotional needs of patients, families, and team members conducting self in manner which is congruent with cultural humility, diversity, equity, and inclusion principals. What you will do Integration of spiritual assessment and spiritual care interventions with patients, families, and care team members. Including the ability to address the needs of those with complex spiritual issues related to end of life, chronic disease, traumatic injury and general issues associated with life circumstances. Responds to and provides appropriate emotional/spiritual support in trauma/crisis situations. Assists patients and families in understanding and completing Advance Directives. Assists in contacting and offering hospitality to outside clergy visiting hospital patients. Offers devotions, blessings and memorial services in Hospital Sanctuary when appropriate. Participates in planning/discharge rounds with the interdisciplinary team on assigned units. Serves as consultant to the clinical teams including ethics. Consults with members of the hospital staff regarding patient and family care. Responds to referrals and requests for immediate spiritual care and refers to other spiritual care staff or community clergy/congregations when appropriate. Clear, concise and timely documentation to include medical iCare chart documentation, log record of visits and verbal handoffs to other Chaplain staff expected. Call back for deaths, traumas and code blue within 10 minutes (30 minutes on call). May mentors, provide didactics, iCare electronic medical record training and evaluates work of chaplain residents, interns and volunteers. Qualifications Education Masters Degree, Divinity or Equivalent Education approved by Association of Professional Chaplains (APC) or Cognate Group (Preferred) Bachelors Degree, Theological studies or related field (Required) and Program Graduate, 4 units of ACPE or approved Cognate Group (CASC, NAJC, NACC) (Required) Experience 1 year Experience as a Chaplain (Required) 1 year Experience in Hospital or Patient Care Environment (Preferred) Skills and Abilities Must have public speaking skills, organizational skills, cultural competence, patience, ability to actively listen, interpersonal skills, empathy, liturgical planning, crisis intervention experience and interfaith dialogue skills. Must demonstrate ability to learn bereavement and spiritual counseling skills. Must conduct self in manner which is congruent with cultural humility, diversity, equity, and inclusion principals.
