Lead Electrochemistry Research Engineer (P5, PhD)

The Analog Garage is ADI’s Research and Advanced Development Center in downtown Boston and empowers ADI by pioneering breakthrough technologies. The Deep Tech Architecture group within the Analog Garage is applying leading-edge circuit design, device design, and nano-scale fabrication technologies to develop innovative solutions to big societal problems. 

 

The Deep Tech Architecture group is seeking a motivated, experienced Lead Electrochemistry Research Engineer to join our dynamic team. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in electrochemical cells, with specific expertise in fuel cells, electrolyzer cells, or bioelectrochemistry such as patch clamp recordings, lab-on-a-chip technology, and other biological systems. The role involves modeling electrochemical cells using FEA (Finite Element Analysis) or equivalent circuit models, interpreting complex data, and drawing actionable conclusions to advance breakthrough innovation in health of human, health of planet, and other strategic focus areas for ADI. 

 

Responsibilities include one or more of the following:  

 

  • Research and Development: Develop and implement models of electrochemical cells using FEA, physics-based or equivalent circuit methods. 

  • Electrochemical Analysis: Interpret Nyquist curves and analyze data including cell voltages, temperatures, pressure, H2 crossover, and thermal imaging to draw meaningful conclusions. 

  • Data Analysis and Reporting: Utilize scripting languages (e.g.: Python) for programming and data analytics to support modeling and data interpretation efforts. Additionally, contribute to the development of algorithms and statistical methods for data analysis. 

  • Collaboration: Work closely with a multidisciplinary team to integrate findings and improve electrochemical cell designs and control algorithms. 

  • Stay Current: Keep up to date with the latest developments in electrochemical cell technologies, fuel cells, bioelectrochemistry and electrolyzers. 

 

Qualifications 

 

Education: 

  • PhD in Chemistry, Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, Electrochemistry, Physics or a closely related field. 

  • Candidates with a master’s degree and significant relevant experience will also be considered. 

Experience: 

  • Proven experience in electrochemical cells, with a focus on fuel cells or electrolyzer cells, especially PEM. 

  • Experience working with an OEM/manufacturer of fuel cell or electrolyzer stacks is preferred but not required. 

Technical Skills: 

  • Strong background in modeling electrochemical cells using FEA, equivalent circuit or physics-based models. 

  • Proficient in interpreting Nyquist curves and analyzing data related to electrochemical cells and/or bioelectrochemistry. 

  • Working knowledge of Python for programming and data analytics. 

  • Familiarity with algorithms, statistical inference, and classification techniques is a strong plus. 

  • Understanding of the energy economy and the role of hydrogen and alternative energy sources is desirable. 

Soft Skills: 

  • Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail. 

  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to convey complex scientific concepts to diverse audiences. 

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced, interdisciplinary environment.
