To learn more about Convatec, please visit http://www.convatecgroup.com About the Role: Reporting to the Director of Materials Engineering, the Materials Engineer will be a member of Convatec’s newly-founded materials center of excellence based in the new Convatec Technology Center in the greater Boston area. This individual will engage globally with Convatec’s four major business units, supporting materials innovations that differentiate product performance, elevate quality, and reduce manufacturing cost. The Materials Engineer will apply solid polymer science principles to the conceptualization, prototyping and development of new materials technologies. They will be working with a variety of materials processing and analytical measurement techniques, both in-house and at local universities. They will independently drive their own research projects by planning, executing, and reporting experiments. They will be a collaborative member of our dynamic and growing biomaterials team and help us build our capabilities and culture. Duties and Responsibilities: Conduct laboratory research safely and rigorously. Help develop new laboratory capabilities necessary for experimentation and materials characterization. Work with senior scientists in the group to identify and structure research projects. Independently drive these projects forward by planning, executing, analyzing, and reporting experiments. Participate in global R&D teams, contributing experimental work and insight to multiple simultaneous efforts. Consult with a wide range of new product development and sustaining engineering teams on technical matters related to polymer formulation, polymer chemistry and surface science, and complete sub-projects as needed to support critical programs. Consult with a wide range of new product development and sustaining engineering teams on Principal Contacts Internal: R&D, Clinical, Marketing, Sustaining Engineering, Operations External: Suppliers, Universities, Development Partners Travel Requirements: Limited travel requirements (<10%) Language Skills Required: English Education and Qualifications: B.Sc. in Materials Science, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or similar discipline with an emphasis on polymer chemistry and physics Software proficiencies in Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint and basic coding (e.g. VBA, Python, Matlab, Labview or similar) are required. Experience with statistical analysis with regards to DOE and data analysis is a plus. Experience: Minimum 3 years of experience in polymer-focused R&D or product development Hands-on experience in a lab environment including strong technical skills and safety mindset. Technical writing and presentation, demonstrated in the form of research reports, academic thesis, peer-reviewed publications, conference posters or presentations or similar Demonstrated time and project management experience Competencies: Ability to learn quickly and dig into multiple problems simultaneously Creativity, open-mindedness, ability to think of many different solutions to a problem Bias for action, unafraid to learn by doing Drive to build new systems, processes, be involved in building something new Strong analytical and problem-solving skills; ability to drive for solutions to complex problems. Demonstrated ability to perform as member of a multifunctional team. Strong oral and written communication skills to effectively communicate technical information to different parts of our organization. Good understanding of polymeric materials, experience in formulation is a plus. Experience in prototyping and fabrication is a plus. Medical device or biopharmaceutical industry experience is a plus.
