Depending upon the desired qualifications of the successful applicant, the hiring manager may elect to fill this position at a higher level within the job hierarchy.

Responsible for evaluating, testing, repairing, and maintaining single and three phase Distribution class equipment on a routine basis including but not limited to pole mount transformers, mini-pads, single phase regulators, three phase pad mounts, vaults and reclosers in alignment with the organization set monthly goals.

This position is also responsible for:

  • Quality assurance (QA) and warranty repair of single phase regulators

  • Loading and unloading of tractor trailers of Distribution and Transmission equipment

  • Providing technical guidance and support to Distribution organizations and other departments such as Purchasing, Legal claims, Distribution Field Supervisor, MSR, Distribution Line Tech., Distribution Engineering Standards, Distribution Account Managers, and outside contractors and venders to resolve failures and warranty issues.

  • Special projects such as setting up pad mounts and regulators on 12-kv or 23-kv, dual voltage type transformers, re-configure internal arrestors, bushing wells and putting R-temp oil in units for upcoming major outage for environmental purposes. Within this position, employees must become proficient in evaluating, testing, repairing, and maintaining transformers prior to conducting the same evolution on reclosers.

Responsibilities:

Inspection, Evaluation, Testing, and Repair of Distribution Class Equipment

  • Responsible for evaluating, testing, repairing, and meeting monthly goals on the following types of Distribution equipment

  • Quality Assurance inspection and testing for single phase regulators

  • Single phase, one bushing, conventional and CSP transformers, three primary and three secondary voltage classes with capacity ranges from 5kVA to 75kVA, ten different manufactures with various models

  • Single phase, two bushing, conventional transformers, three primary and six secondary voltage classes with capacity ranges from 25kVA to 500kVA, seven different manufacturers with various models

  • Single phase pad mount transformers and three phase mini-pad mount transformers, two primary and three secondary voltage classes with capacity ranges from 25kVA to 250kVA, five different manufacturers with various models

  • Single phase reclosers, five different types, two voltage classes

  • Three phase reclosers, three different types, two voltage classes

  • Potential transformers, 0.5 – 1.0kVA rating

  • Three Phase Pad Mount Transformers Demonstrate competency in performing work on the equipment listed using the following test equipment

  • Single and three phase transformer turns ratio (TTR) test sets

  • Insulation resistance tester (Megger)

  • Single phase transformer test system (includes TTR, no load loss test, and 400Hz induced voltage test)

  • Ensure all new equipment meets the appropriate Equipment Specifications and that all work is performed per Distribution Standards guidelines

Be a backup for oil room personnel as needed for the loading and unloading of tankers

  • Working / assisting in other areas within the shop when needed

  • Capable of climbing ladders, working off a ladder, or working at heights, off platforms such as tankers that require you to be hooked to harness restraints or fall protection devices

  • Knowledge of power tools air or electric such as grinders, drills, skill saws, reciprocating saw, impact wrenches, welding, cutting and sand blasting equipment

  • Ability to perform repetitive tasks while maintaining attention to detail

  • Ability to read / understand / follow vendor manuals and CAD drawings

  • Responsible for special projects such as setting up regulators on 12-kv or 23-kv settings or dual type voltage transformers, re-configure internal arrestors, bushing wells and putting R-temp oil in units for upcoming major outage for environmental purposes

Responsible for providing technical guidance support to Distribution personnel such as Distribution Field Supervisor, MSR, Distribution Line Tech, Distribution Engineering Standards , Distribution Account Managers and working with other departments such as Legal, Claims, and Purchasing.

  • Identifying, troubleshooting, and documenting the root cause or trends with Venders on warranty or non-warranty issues for all Distribution equipment failures and repairs and reporting it to the appropriate organization within Progress Energy so these organizations can make better decision on bench marketing these Manufactures for future purchases or improvements

Responsible and accountable for having daily Pre-Jobs, and attending or make up Monthly Unit Safety Meetings, and staying current with certain Plant View courses and required trainings and certifications. Example Environmental Hazard, Electrical Safety, Lead Worker, Operating forklifts, CPR, First Aid, Cranes, Rigging for loading and unloading trucks and valid driver’s license.

  • Three phase pad mount and vault type transformers, two primary and three secondary voltage classes with capacity ranges from 75kVA to 12,500kVA, four different manufacturers with various models

Required/Basic Qualifications (OFE Electrician II)

  • High School/GED degree

  • One (1) year related work experience

  • Valid Drivers License

Required/Basic Qualifications (OFE Electrician III)

  • High School/GED degree

  • In addition to required degree, two (2) years related work experience

  • Valid Drivers License

Desired Qualifications:

  • Technical degree in Electrical study

  • In addition to desired degree, 2 years related work experience

  • Forklift certified

  • Ability to work in a team/group setting, quick learner, safety oriented, detail oriented, strong work ethic, and ability to trouble shoot equipment

  • Understanding of basic electricity (ac, dc, ohm's law, single phase, three phase, watts, vars, va, power, etc.)

  • Understanding of Compressed Gas Safety

  • Understanding of Hazardous Chemicals, MSDS, Facility Emergency Response, and proper handling and disposal of PCB contaminated material and equipment

  • Understanding of General Machine Guarding/Tool Safety, Includes drills, grinders, power and air actuated tools, and hand tools

  • Basic understanding of the purpose and proper use of diagnostic test equipment

  • Qualification in CPR, First Aid and Bloodborne Pathogens

Working Conditions:

  • Onsite Mobility Classification – Work will be performed at a company facility.

Specific Requirements:

  • Proper use and care of personal protective equipment, including fall arrest gear

  • Ability to properly load, secure and unload equipment and materials using proper rigging and material handling techniques

  • Use of ladders

  • Ability to lift 50 lbs.

  • Perform work in accordance with Substation Maintenance Procedures, as applicable

  • Ability to cut gaskets

  • Ability to read/understand/follow instructions in equipment manuals

  • Perform basic troubleshooting techniques and repair
